In the late 1980's I resided in Toronto Ontario, where I trained as a modern dancer and spent a great deal of time sitting, smoking, pondering and journaling. I did this in var0ious coffee shops spread out through the downtown core. Toronto was a very different city at that time, than it is in 2019. It had a different type of vibrance, it was more affordable and easier to make a living. Although difficult to live as an artist, it seemed that there were always new possibilities, new places to share and perform work around each corner. There was time to sit and ponder, write, smoke (a multitude of affordable cigarettes) and just "be."I really loved to people watch, and being trained a modern dancer, I was fascinated and interested in the language of the body. It spoke of where people came from, who they were at the present, who they may be in the future. I still feel to this day that actions truly do speak louder than words.The multitudes of cafes offered many a window seat, and from their aquarium view, I would write, draw, imagine for hours. It was a time without cell phones. Cable television was too expensive, so entertainment was found in other places. Even making plans with friends was not so immediate, telephones did not ring in our pockets, they rang at home, where the message would be recorded, For many of us, we would retrieve the message when we got home, not at work, or on the street waiting for the bus. There was more time, there were fewer emergencies.So, this is where and when the following body of work is born. A young artist being inspired by his mentors, contemplating and expressing while exploring his spirit through the art of modern dance.
