The new nation, the United States of America, doubled overnight in size with the purchase of a vast tract of land west of the Mississippi River. The sitting president, Thomas Jefferson, negotiated a deal for the land with French ruler Napoleon. Now that America had all this new unexplored territory, Jefferson knew it was time to explore this new land and firmly place America's claim on this expansive wilderness. In 1803, Jefferson commissioned the Corps of Discovery and named U.S. Army Captain Meriwether Lewis as the leader. Lewis enlisted the help of his old friend and comrade, William Clark to help lead the group. After much preparation, the small group of men lead by Lewis and Clark, left St. Louis and traveled up the Missouri River into lands that had been virtually unexplored by Europeans. Along the way, the expedition encountered many hardships. Key to their survival was the guidance and aid given to the group by the native Indians along the way. The best known native American was a young Shoshone woman named Sacagawea, who proved to be key as a guide and interpreter along the long journey to the Pacific coast. Over a year into this long journey, Corps of Discovery arrived at the Pacific Ocean in present-day Oregon. The group of explorers spent a long, cold winter on the Oregon coast and in the spring started the arduous trek back to civilization. It would be September of 1806 before they arrived in St. Louis where they were treated as returning heroes. The geographic and scientific information brought back by the Lewis and Clark expedition was invaluable in helping the new nation expand westward. Join this journey of discovery and adventure!

You are an unpublished writer with a long and impressive background in your field of expertise, and you've got an idea for a great book. You write a proposal, and send it off to a publisher who has stated a need for this type of book. It seems like a perfect match. Three weeks later you receive a rejection letter: "Thanks for your interest in us. Unfortunately, your idea doesn't meet our current needs." You are puzzled. Or, you look through the advertisements in Writer's Digest magazine, and find several publishing houses "now seeking new and established authors." Having waited for an opportunity for years, you print the manuscript that has been gathering "dust" in your computer folder and rush it to the post office. Don't! If it sounds too easy, it is. Or, you just landed your first book contract with a legitimate publisher. Instant fame, right? Wrong! Confessions of a Published Author: 47 Truths About What Can Go Right and Wrong When Selling Your Book to a Traditional Publisher, talks straight about the publishing experience, with focus on asking, "What if?" What if you don't want to write your manuscript in the recommended format? What if you have no credentials or can't state your qualifications for writing this book? What if you don't like the critique you're getting? What if you can wallpaper your office with rejection slips? What if you want more than the standard 10 percent royalties? A number of common issues are explored, such as what to include and what to leave out of your query letter; what matters and what doesn't, and what you must be careful with when signing the publishing agreement.

Person Place Thing: Compendium 3 is the third compilation of the author Robert Benefiel's work. Meant as a means to introduce new readers to a vast amount of the writer's work in a short time, and selected by the author himself, the compendiums typically span five books and collect both some of the more well-known pieces along with other lesser known works. Whether approaching the poem from a direct storyteller mode, or in a more simplified abstract fashion, the poems always take on the unique view of a prolific author already having published over 20 books in less than 7 years.
Small print edition 5x8 - Starkishia: Estrella is a story about a little girl who grew up too fast to feel the grass wear thin under the soles of her shoes. Abuse thickened her skin, yet her nightmares were as dark as they were real. The library became her sanctuary where stories took her to another place and time. But, in reality there was nothing imaginary about the bruises under her clothing as she advanced from one classroom to another during middle school, or nothing fictitious about being molested by the maggot hands of a despicable relative. Her plight was hidden in a small town in Georgia, just as her physical abuse was disregarded by the school's social worker. This colored child was brought into this world by her 14 year old mother who was ruthlessly dominated by her husband. Starkishia loved her mother above all else; her step-father who provided shelter for them witnessed her birth and helped raise her. She consumed pieces of joy, but sometimes she received broken reprisals and ended up walking down the dark road alone; yet in some fortunate way humanity was always within reach. After her parents split up, Starkishia and her family ended up in Texas. Single parenthood changed their family structure forevermore. Starkishia became a wage earner at age 13; she also became homeless the following year. She was, for years, engulfed by her impoverished and dysfunctional environment. She married a native of Mexico a few days after her 15th birthday. He nicknamed her 'Estrella' a Spanish term which means 'Star.' It goes without saying that Starkishia was born in the land of opportunity, but it was not exactly within her reach. Yes, she was her grandmother's star, but she was a statistic of minimal proportions as far as small town and suburbia America was concerned. Shortly after marriage, she became a mother. Afterward the life of this teen went downhill at lightning speed. Many readers will identify with her; for, she walked away from her husband broken hearted; then, she fell in love with another man, and as new babies arrived, she took her limited funds and focused on the lives of those under her roof; in time, her parental absence to her oldest two children turned flat out into abandonment. Have mercy! Starkishia was a lost teen, but through grace she eventually became a productive woman in American society. Meredith Etc., a small press, proudly introduces readers to Starkishia: Estrella, a story about the perils of teen parenthood, economic dispossession, and the charity of new beginnings.Meredith Coleman McGee, Publisher/Acquisition EditorMeredith Etc., a small pressJackson, Mississippi, USAwww.meredithetc.com

Montana's history is rich, colorful, and full of excitement in this fully-illustrated third volume of the state's history. Montana Territory had 20,595 people in 1870 and the vast majority were Indians. Those Indians would fight for their lands, and much of the territory's focus was on the Indian Wars raging across the state. By 1900 there were 243,329 people in the State of Montana. The numbers would only continue to rise as more and more businessmen got interested in the state's natural resources.Mining dominated the 1880s and 1890s, even as politics were changing both locally and nationally. The Panic of 1893 took the wind from the silver industry in the state, but copper mining remained strong. And mining men like Marcus Daly and William A. Clark did everything in their power to get their way politically. It was a raucous time in the state over these three decades, and its people and places are all profiled. Like the first and second volumes in this Montana history series, Tribes and Trappers and Priests and Prospectors, this third volume takes a biographical approach. Montana's history is told through the stories of the people who lived here, and from those stories we're better able to understand how the state came to be what it is today. Discover why Montana is called "The Last Best Place" in this third volume of Montana history - buy this book right now!

It is the pure grace of Allah Ta'ala that He has made the religion of Islam our faith. It is this same religion that gives us a sense of direction and a mission to fulfill as the purpose of our lives. Like all missions, instructions are given, goals are aimed for and rewards or punishments are given out in lieu of the outcome. Thus is the course of our lives. The mission of our life is what Allah has revealed in the Qur'an, "I have only created Jinns and men, that they may serve Me." adh-Dhariyat This book talks about two possible paths that a person can take. One is that of a person who lived with a Muslim name, but lost his faith; it speaks of his failure in his mission and loss in missing his goal and the subsequent punishment for this failure. The second is that of a true Muslim who lives to fulfil this mission and strives to complete the goals set out, and the subsequent rewards that await him. In both instances what has been mentioned is not only the deeds of both the people and their outcome, but this book covers their way of life, their sudden meeting with Death, their journey to and stay in the grave, their state on the Day of Reckoning, their meeting with their permanent abodes, and their eternities. This book is an explanation of the poem that describes the two paths that a person may take. The foundation of the poem originally was the two Hadiths that are included at the end of this book. The poem and the book then developed to include more verses of the Qur'an and more Ahadith, and eventually (after two years) took the form that is now presented to you. The purpose of this book with its vivid language is not to make an enjoyable or a limited educational read, but rather to give the reader an idea of what is beyond the deceptive screen of death.
