Game Design Deep Dive: Roguelikes examines the history and rise of the often-confusing roguelike genre. Despite being more than 30 years old, the roguelike genre remains a mystery to a lot of consumers and developers. Procedural generation, or having the game generate content, has been a cornerstone and point of complexity since its inception. The 2010s saw an explosion of new designs and examples, along with a debate about what a roguelike is. The genre found its way back to mainstream audiences with the award-winning Demon's Souls and Dark Souls. Since then, roguelikes have revolutionized the way we see and design games. Author and game design critic Joshua Bycer explains the differences between the various roguelike designs and give a detailed blueprint showing what makes the best ones work. The first of its kind talking about the roguelike genrea Examines the design and methodology of roguelike games and the different variationsA high-level discussion and breakdown of procedural and random content generationJoshua Bycer is a game design critic with more than seven years of experience critically analyzing game design and the industry itself. In that time, through Game-Wisdom, he has interviewed hundreds of game developers and members of the industry about what it means to design video games. He is also a public speaker and presenter at schools and libraries on game design and game development.

  • - The Way of the World
    av Jonathan Allday
    647 - 1 750,-

The concept of entropy arises in diverse branches of science, including physics where it plays a crucial role. However, the nature of entropy as a unifying concept is not widely discussed - it is dealt with in a piecemeal manner within different contexts. The interpretation of the concept is also subtly different in each case. This book will draw these diverse threads together and present entropy as one of the crucial physical concepts. It will cover a range of different applications of entropy, from the classical theory of thermodynamics, the statistical approach, entropy in quantum theory, information theory and finally its manifestation in black hole physics. Each will be presented in a manner suitable for both undergraduates and interested laypersons with no previous knowledge. The book will take an overview of these areas and see to what extent the concept of entropy is being treated in the same way in each, and also how it differs.Key Features: - Provides an accessible introduction to the exciting topic of entropy.- Includes the latest research on black holes, quantum theory, and the Big Bang.- Contains worked examples and exercises.Jonathan Allday taught physics at range of schools in the UK. After attending the Liverpool Blue Coat School, he took his first degree in Natural Sciences at Cambridge, then gained a PhD in particle physics in 1989 at Liverpool University. Shortly after this, he started work on Quarks Leptons and the Big Bang, now published by Taylor & Francis and available in its third edition, which was intended as a rigorous but accessible introduction to these topics. Since then, he has also written Apollo in Perspective, Quantum Reality (now in its second edition) and Space-time, co-authored a successful textbook, and contributed to an encyclopaedia for young scientists. He has also written on aspects of the history and philosophy of science. Outside of physics, Jonathan has a keen interest in cricket and Formula 1.Simon Hands was also educated at the Blue Coat School and Cambridge University, followed by a PhD in theoretical particle physics at the University of Edinburgh. After research positions at the universities of Oxford, Illinois, Glasgow, and then CERN, he taught and researched theoretical and computational physics at Swansea University for almost 30 years. He moved to the University of Liverpool in 2021, where among other things he helps manage the DiRAC high performance computing facility for astronomy, nuclear and particle physics theory. An elected Fellow of the Learned Society of Wales, Simon enjoys singing and cycling.

We are living in the Golden Age of Data Visualization. The COVID-19 pandemic has demonstrated how we increasingly use data visualizations to make sense of the world. Business analysts fill their presentations with charts, journalists use infographics to engage their readers, we rely on the dials and gauges on our household appliances, and we use mapping apps on our smartphones to find our way. This book explains how and why this has happened. It details the evolution of information graphics, the kinds of graphics at the core of data visualization--maps, diagrams, charts, scientific and medical images--from prehistory to the present day. It explains how the cultural context, production and presentation technologies, and data availability have shaped the history of data visualization. It considers the perceptual and cognitive reasons why data visualization is so effective and explores the little-known world of tactile graphics--raised line drawings used by people who are blind. The book also investigates the way visualization has shaped our modern world. How the European Renaissance and the Scientific Revolution relied on maps and technical and scientific drawings and how graphics influence how we think about abstract concepts like time and social connection. This book is written for data visualization researchers and professionals, and anyone interested in data visualization and the way we use graphics to understand and think about the world.
