    av Nick Lyons

This book contains a foreword by Maurice Conlon, Associate Director, Appraisal and Revalidation Lead, NHS Clinical Governance Support Team. This is an invaluable, detailed guide offering practical resources for medical professionals in the challenging role of appraiser. It assists with confidence, professionalism and competency and contains a comprehensive, up-to-date summary of the 'state of play' for appraising doctors. It also includes sample forms, contracts for guidance and links to web resources. "The Appraiser's Handbook" provides vital information for all those involved in continuing professional development in primary and secondary care. Appraisal leads and managers in primary and secondary care trusts will find it of great interest, as will clinical tutors, GP tutors and deanery educational teams. "This book aims to support appraisers in developing their skills in order to ensure that the doctor whom they appraise, gains the maximum possible benefit from the time spent in, and preparing for, the appraisal. The appraiser will find appraisees who enthusiastically embrace appraisal and those who doubt its use and place in their professional development. Different approaches may be needed to support and understand different individuals." - Nick Lyons, Susanne Caesar and Abayomi McEwen. "This book, written by a trio steeped in appraisal, is a valuable resource for appraisers. It will help doctors learning to be appraisers, and experienced appraisers. It will also help those organising appraisal, to remind them of the aims of the process. Teachers of appraisal will be able to use it to supplement and support their curricula. I believe revalidation, when it arrives, will be the single biggest step towards improvement taken by the profession, since the introduction of the medical register. I also believe this depends upon the inclusion of appraisal within the revalidation package. Putting high-quality, developmental appraisal 'in the water' for the medical profession will bring about a whole-profession shift in terms of lifelong professional development. This book will support that aim." - Maurice Conlon, in the Foreword.

    av Stefan Hammel
    295,-

Following tenets set out by Milton Erickson, Therapeutic Interventions in Three Sentences: Reshaping Ericksonian Hypnotherapy by Talking to the Brain and Body presents an array of short, effective commands which have been developed for use in connection with a wide range of mental and psychosomatic disorders.Examining in detail the basic building blocks which must be in place in order for someone to send an effective command to his or her sub-conscious mind, the book presents an elegant way of using informal variations of Ericksonian hypnotherapy in awake states and transferring these principles to a variety of therapeutic settings. The methods described follow specific rules derived from hypnotherapy but can be integrated into any other form of counselling or therapy and can be used in short sessions, in telephone consultations and with patients in critical states, as well as conversations of a therapeutic nature by non-therapeutic professionals. The book explains why and how these interventions work, their general structure, and how they can be used to tackle specific needs such as trauma, depression, and anxiety disorders. The book will be of great interest to counsellors, doctors and therapists of different orientations who are looking for therapeutic methods that can be used in short sessions or with patients in critical states, as well as non-therapeutic professionals who engage in conversations of a therapeutic nature, such as social workers, pastors, nurses, carers and teachers (including SEN teachers).

A biofilm is a collection of microbial cells that have adhered to biotic surfaces such as plant cuticles or animal epithelia, as well as abiotic surfaces such as rocky substratum or catheter exteriors. The life cycle of a microorganism includes the fundamental process of biofilm formation for survival in diverse and harsh environments since it is a protected mode of growth allowing colonisation of new habitats by dispersal of microbes from the microbial clusters. The biofilm bound microorganisms remain embedded in an extracellular polymeric matrix that protects the indwelling cells from surfactants, biocides, several invaders like protozoans, and defences offered by the hosts like phagocytic cells. The biofilm bound recalcitrant microbes induce chronic and nosocomial diseases, posing a serious threat to public health. It has been observed that various antimicrobial drugs are able to successfully remove the planktonic (freely suspended) states of microbes as compared to the sessile (substrate-bound) forms, thus resulting in the development of antimicrobial resistance.Modern pharmacological strategies targeting the biofilm matrix differ from the conventional methods of antibiotic usage. This includes the use of natural compounds such as plant bioactive molecules, antimicrobial peptides, green synthesised nanoparticles, or secondary metabolites from other organisms that not only prevent the rise of antimicrobial resistance but are also safe for the host tissues.Biofilm Associated Antimicrobial Resistance and Its Recovery provides a detailed and systematic review of alternative pharmacological developments in the field of biofilm research.Features: A narrative overview of the mechanism of biofilm formation and its role in the emergence of antimicrobial resistance Recent research in the development of antibiofilm remedies involving biogenic compounds Advancements in biofilm detection methodologies with cutting-edge technologies This book serves as a resource for researchers who need to understand and analyze the progression of events during microbial biofilm formation, as well as design safer methodologies for its successful eradication. It may also be used as a textbook for a graduate level course in microbiology or microbial biotechnology.

  • - Judicial Reasoning and the Application of Forensic Science in Criminal Cases
    av Charles P Nemeth
    1 072,-

While there are several texts that focus on forensic science techniques and applications, there are few to no quality books that adequately address the judicial interpretation of forensic legal and scientific principles. The field of forensic science and law has long been in need of a historic casebook.Forensic Law Casebook: Judicial Reasoning and the Application of Forensic Science in Criminal Cases fills the current void by reviewing actual case law and translating the practical application of science to the courtroom. Each chapter represents a unique forensic discipline, providing a short introduction to the subject matter, the relevant case law and court cases that pertain to that subject area and posing a variety of questions and issues to the student. All cases provided contain a sufficient portion of the legal decision - and its implications to the evidence and analytical practices of that discipline - in order to then pose critical and analytical questions to the student, once they have fully read the case material and the decision and considered its implications. Each chapter ends its theoretical examination with real-world experience encountered by those laboring in the investigative and collection processes - as well as problems or challenges encountered by those employed in the office of the prosecutor, public defender, medical examiner or other aligned office. This last section of each chapter gives true meaning and impact as to how forensic law decision-making impacts forensic practitioners, and a true understanding of the responsibility placed on law enforcement, investigators and scientists tasked with collecting, preserving and analyzing the evidence.Forensic Law Casebook provides the reader with an array of legal cases and decisions that lay out the parameters of forensic law and its evidentiary value. In the end, what emerges from this are the bedrock principles that guide current forensic evidence and the admissibility of various practices common to the field applications of forensic science. Practitioners, law students, undergraduate and graduate students in compatible majors - as well as law and university libraries - will benefit from this essential reference and adjunct to anyone studying forensic science, criminalistics and the law.
