  • - A Mysterious New Home
    av Susie Keene
    180,-

This is the story of eight-year-old Daisy and her family's move into their new home. Daisy encounters many shocks and surprises throughout the story as she meets with talking animals and birds, fairies and mythical creatures, some of whom are named after characters from Charles Dickens novels. The family join forces with the old lady who used to live in the house, and their rather scary next-door neighbours to attempt to save the wood beside Bluebell Lodge from developers. The aim of this book is to make children more aware of a number of the works of Charles Dickens whilst enjoying the story, and inspiring them to read the books for themselves.

Initially I chronicle our family's itinerant service lifestyle trailing my father's RAF postings during his twenty-nine years of being a chaplain from 1947. Although there have been numerous books written by service men past and present, this one uniquely contemplates the entire experience through the eyes of a dependent child. Now a mainly bygone era, my personal recollections describes exhilarating travel, life on the various bases resulting in disrupted schooling and friendships, adventures and problems, especially for my youngest brother who was born handicapped from the Rubella syndrome and was adversely affected by the vagaries of this nomadic existence. The second half of the book documents my seven years as a boarder in Northern Ireland, through medical school, becoming a junior doctor and my subsequent work as a GP and Police Surgeon. I record many interesting case histories and anecdotes, including some pithy experiences as a Forensic Medical Examiner. I am aware that many readers are captivated by true-life medical stories, but I also weave an insight into the reorganization of general practice in the last thirty years, as well as my own personal life experiences, contrasting those with the unfolding of my handicapped brother's circumstances.

I am Jimmy Gilheaney and this is my story. It follows my family from Ireland to Scotland and eventually it shows how we settled in Wales. This book is action packed from encounters with the IRA to family feuds to bare knuckle boxing - it's got a bit of everything. It charts my life from when I grew up in the 80s and 90s to the present day; it shows how I got into boxing, how I met my wife, how I got into bare knuckle fighting; it shows my struggles with mental health. I have put my heart on my sleeve in this book, wrinkles, spots and all, so if you want to know what it's like to be a traveller this is the book for you, because I have led an action packed life and I would like to share it with you. I hope you enjoy it.

The author was born and brought up in Cairo, Egypt. She was expelled with her family in 1956 as a result of the Suez crisis and came to England as a refugee. Her maternal grandparents were born and lived in Aleppo, which they subsequently left for economic reasons, settling in Egypt in 1910. Her paternal ancestors originated from Toledo and were expelled from Spain in 1492 during the time of the Inquisition. They eventually settled in Constantinople, but the gradual collapse of the Ottoman Empire left them struggling financially and her grandparents chose to leave and seek their fortune in Egypt. The main purpose of writing this book was to transmit to her family a legacy she is proud of and also to share this with a wider audience. Her heritage is a unique blend of three different cultures and styles of cooking, which she has tried to amalgamate in her book. The food of Aleppo is known for its delicacy of seasoning and elaborateness and many dishes have a sweet-and-sour flavour, provided by the balance of citrus fruits, pomegranates, tamarind and dried fruits. Judeo Spanish cooking is relatively simple, with the use mainly of olive oil, lemon juice and very few spices. In addition, the author grew up in Egypt, where cooking and eating were an integral part of everyday life and she still remembers the scents which filled the kitchen, such as the smell of freshly roasted spices, the aroma of orange blossom water and rose petal jam cooking slowly on the stove. There are 260 recipes in the book, covering a wide range, from fish, meat and poultry, vegetarian dishes, soups and salads to cakes, sweet and savoury pastries, Passover baking and authentic Egyptian dishes. Included are many Sephardi favourites, such as borekas, borekitas, pastelles, boyos, bulemas, apio con avas, almodrote de berendjena, albondigas de pishkado, avgolemono soup, prasifutchi, mina de prasa, travados and sansaticos. There are also many Judeo Syrian dishes, such as sweet and tart chicken with apricots, meatballs in apricot sauce, aubergines stuffed with quince, stuffed caramelised onions, kibbeh bil sanieh and okra with prunes and apricots. The Egyptian dishes are what the author remembers her family cooking back in Cairo, from megadarah, molokhehia, lahmah b'ageen, mahshi, koshari, samak b'fereek, filo triangles, roz we hamud, ta'ameyeh, sambusek and dukka, to the classics baklava, konafa, basbousa, Om Ali, Aish ell saraya, menenas and ghorayebah.

A 'health' perspective on a lifetime's involvement in sporting competion.I wonder how I'd be received, if having read another book on Health and Fitness; I then take the information straight from within the covers of that book and copy the same detail into yet 'another' Health and Fitness book? In the process of doing that I quietly remove the original author's name and replace theirs with mine. Would I? Could I? Get away with it? The answer of course is an absolute and resolute yes, because it seems to happen all the time. Furthermore, to appeal to a certain catchment of the market and to encourage a preponderance of readers, I then alter my 'less than attractive' elderly face and manufacture another one, I mean, I buy, a new much more attractive and presentable front, I do the latter by the application consisting of a mass of cosmetics - professionally applied of course, then as a last resort (I mean they're a 'must have' and exceedingly fashionable adornment on any celeb) I also cram into my somewhat elongated stretched gob 40 or 50 brand new 'Dick Emery' Dulux brilliant white and even teeth. With that final touch, reassuringly, the cover-up instantly succeeds in ridding me of the age induced wrinkles I have mysteriously but naturally accumulated over my 70 years of living, and turns my weather-beaten face into an unrecognisable smiling Adonis of a man! My face is now resplendent and just oozes health as I'm now transported centre stage from sitting room to the front cover of 'my' new book. The journey is miraculous, even my wife fancies me, can you believe it? On reflection I have a short pause for caution and I consider the book's information, but because it's all copied it can't be wrong, can it? I'll add a few well-chosen eye-catching words such as 'I hereby promise you this book (first edition) will change your life overnight!' The sting is finally complete, and the would-be super optimistic punter lays their money down and swiftly vacates the shop with an unmistakable 'can't wait' enthusiastic aura, normally reserved for first night honeymooners! And this book? Regardless of the above trivia, and regardless of living in a world whereby it's increasingly difficult to be 'original' or in any way different, because we are all subjected to just so much repetition and replication, my pledge is that the information included here has all been tried and tested during my current 70 years of consistent 'work alone' trial and error life. None of my views make me right, of course, and that's because all of us are unique and all of us are so very different. But this formula and this attitude worked for me - and more importantly still does! Am I on the make? Not in the slightest - if I release the book, I expect no financial gains, the book's given me something to do. If you read it, I hope it makes sense and is at least different! Good health!
