What do 'bimbo,' 'glitch,' 'savvy,' and 'shtick' all have in common? They are all expressions used in informal American English that have been taken from other languages. This pioneering book provides a comprehensive description of borrowings in informal American English, based on a large database of citations from thousands of contemporary sources, including the press, film, and TV. It presents the United States as a linguistic 'melting pot,' with words from a diverse range of languages now frequently appearing in the lexicon. It examines these borrowings from various perspectives, including discussions of terms, donors, types, changes, functions, and themes. It also features an alphabetical glossary of 1,200 representative expressions, defined and illustrated by 5,500 usage examples, providing an insightful and practical resource for readers. Combining scholarship with readability, this book is a fascinating storehouse of information for students and researchers in linguistics as well as anyone interested in lexical variation in contemporary English.

Anxiety about the threat of atheism was rampant in the early modern period yet, paradoxically, examples of openly-expressed irreligious opinion are surprisingly rare. This book offers a detailed analysis of three cases, and contrasts the real 'assurance' shown by such figures with the doubts expressed, often privately, by believers.

"This Element offers an in-depth reinterpretation of Philip Henslowe's records of new plays, develops a novel account of how theatre companies copied and adapted plays in one another's repertories, and reconstructs an early modern cluster of Hieronimo plays that also allows us to reimagine Ben Jonson's career as an actor"--

In this era of specialisation, obstetricians are becoming increasingly skilled at their jobs and deskilled in areas outside their expertise. In recent years, the education and training curricula for obstetrics and gynaecology has changed, with obstetricians expected to manage women with complex gynaecological problems encountered during pregnancy and the postnatal period competently, despite training and curricula not covering these problems in detail. Exploring common gynaecological problems such as ovarian cysts, management of vaginal prolapse and female genital mutilation, this practical book offers guidance for managing these conditions throughout the different stages of pregnancy and post-partum. Each chapter has a section on good governance, discussing salient points for clinical practice to improve patient safety and satisfaction, as well as reducing complaints and litigation. This hands-on book provides obstetricians around the globe with the evidence-based knowledge needed to deliver high quality care to pregnant women.

Preparing teachers to work with and for diversity in their classrooms and beyond is an objective that seems globally accepted in pre-service and in-service teacher education. However, what diversity means, what it entails and how to engage with diverse individuals in educational contexts can take on multiple shapes in different parts of the world.

Is a facsimile an edition? In answering this question in relation to Shakespeare, and to early modern writing in general, the author explores the interrelationship between the beginning of the conventional process of collecting and editing Shakespeare's plays and the increasing sophistication of facsimiles.

This Element will be on the three versions of Edmond Malone's An Attempt to Ascertain the Order in which the Plays Attributed to Shakspeare were Written and the way they created, shaped, focused, directed, and misdirected, our idea of the chronology and sequence of Shakespeare's plays.

Apparent contradiction is common in traditional monotheism, and perhaps especially so in standard Christian theology given central doctrines such as the incarnation and trinity. This Element aims to chart out a very elementary but abstract framework through which such contradictions may be approached. This Element does not attempt to address the many options for thinking about contradictions in the face of logical entailment; it charts only a few salient abstract options.

This Element comprehensively scrutinizes the key issue of the accountability of policy-makers in democratic governance. The electoral punishment of the incumbents, parliamentary control of the government, and sanctions in the case of administrative misconduct or negligence are the most visible manifestations of accountability in politics. However, the phenomenon is much more complex, and fully understanding such a multifaceted object requires bridging bodies of work that usually remain disjointed. This Element assesses the effectiveness of vertical accountability through elections and how interinstitutional accountability operates in checks-and-balances systems, along with the growing role of the courts. It evaluates how the accountability of the bureaucracy has been affected by managerial reforms and different governance transformations. It also scrutinizes to what extent mediatization and policy failure boost accountability, before zooming in on the feelings and reactions of those who are held accountable. This title is also available as Open Access on Cambridge Core.

In this Element, the authors introduce and apply a framework for the linguistic analysis of fake news. They define fake news as news that is meant to deceive as opposed to inform and argue that there should be systematic differences between real and fake news that reflect this basic difference in communicative purpose.

Adopting an interdisciplinary approach, Deval Desai presents the novel concept of 'expert ignorance', a practice by which experts continually admit the limits of their knowledge. With a range of illustrative case studies, Desai demonstrates the impact of this powerful yet paradoxical form of expertise in rule of law reform and beyond.

During the production of spoken sentences, the linearisation of a 'thought' is accomplished via the process of grammatical encoding, i.e., the building of a hierarchical syntactic frame that fixes the linear order of lexical concepts. While much research has demonstrated the independence of lexical and syntactic representations, exactly what is represented remains a matter of dispute. Moreover, theories differ in terms of whether words or syntax drive grammatical encoding. This debate is also central to theories of the time-course of grammatical encoding. Speaking is usually a rapid process in which articulation begins before an utterance has been entirely planned. Current theories of grammatical encoding make different claims about the scope of grammatical encoding prior to utterance onset, and the degree to which planning scope is determined by linguistic structure or by cognitive factors. The authors review current theories of grammatical encoding and evaluate them in light of relevant empirical evidence. This title is also available as Open Access on Cambridge Core.

This book shows how literature can influence scientific controversies concerning genetic engineering, cloning, GMOs, and more by dramatizing these issues' human complexity. Literature's value for public policy is demonstrated by examples from the Victorian response to evolution through the Modern Synthesis of genetics to present-day genomics.

This Element proposes a clear and up-to-date description of the state of artificial intelligence today, not only in terms of business processes and strategies, but also its societal reception. It presents our view of the technology landscape, avoiding both the forward-looking, rose-colored utopia and the hyper-apocalyptic gloom. It does so in a concise form, addressing a complex issue in 9 concise and easy-to-read chapters. It aims to discuss the current state of machine learning and AI in strategic management, and to describe the emerging technologies. It conceptualizes their adoption, and then consider the effects of AI technologies' maturity in business organizations.

"Chip designing is a complex task that requires an in-depth understanding of VLSI design flow, skills to employ sophisticated design tools, and keeping pace with the bleeding-edge semiconductor technologies. This lucid textbook is focused on fulfilling these requirements for students, as well as a refresher for professionals in the industry. The book consists of four parts. The first part describes foundational concepts related to VLSI design flow and integrated circuits. It also gives an overview of the design, verification, and test methods employed in a typical VLSI design flow. The second part of the book describes the logic implementation and verification steps such as simulation, static timing analysis, and formal methods. It also explains the modelling of hardware using Verilog and logic synthesis; technology libraries; and timing constraints along with logic, power, and timing optimization techniques. The third part of the book describes the design for test (DFT) methods for digital circuits. The fourth and final part describes physical design methods and physical verification. All the physical design implementation steps such as floorplanning, placement, clock-tree synthesis, and routing are described in this part. Moreover, physical verification steps, such as parasitic extraction, design rule checks (DRCs), electrical rule checks (ERCs), layout versus schematic (LVS) checks, and post-silicon validation are explained. Illustrations and pictorial representations are used liberally to simplify the explanation. Additionally, activities are suggested at the end of relevant chapters to help readers gain a practical understanding of VLSI design flow. Review questions and problems are given at the end of each chapter to revise the concepts. Recent trends and references are listed at the end of each chapter for further reading"--
