This accessible and self-contained guide provides a comprehensive introduction to the popular programming language Python, with a focus on applications in chemistry and chemical physics. Ideally suited to students and researchers of chemistry learning to employ Python for problem-solving in their research, this fast-paced primer first builds a solid foundation in the programming language before progressing to advanced concepts and applications in chemistry. The required syntax and data structures are established, and then applied to solve problems computationally. Popular numerical packages are described in detail, including NumPy, SciPy, Matplotlib, SymPy, and pandas. End of chapter problems are included throughout, with worked solutions available within the book. Additional resources, datasets, and Jupyter Notebooks are provided on a companion website, allowing readers to reinforce their understanding and gain confidence applying their knowledge through a hands-on approach.

Scientists cannot devise theories, construct models, propose explanations, make predictions, or even carry out observations, without first classifying their subject matter. The goal of scientific taxonomy is to come up with classification schemes that conform to nature's own. Another way of putting this is that science aims to devise categories that correspond to 'natural kinds.' The interest in ascertaining the real kinds of things in nature is as old as philosophy itself, but it takes on a different guise when one adopts a naturalist stance in philosophy, that is when one looks closely at scientific practice and takes it as a guide for identifying natural kinds and investigating their general features. This Element surveys existing philosophical accounts of natural kinds, defends a naturalist alternative, and applies it to case studies in a diverse set of sciences. This title is also available as Open Access on Cambridge Core.

Just transition prompts us to explore a number of important dimensions of Earth System Governance research, including sustainability transformations, inequality, power and justice. This Element aims to place just transition in the dynamics of the world political economy over the last several decades and to offer an overview of the varieties of just transitions based on an analytical scheme that focuses on their breadth (coverage), depth (social and ecological priorities) and ambition. The focus on breadth, depth and ambition centers on power, inequality and injustice and allows us to analyze and compare just transitions as a prerequisite for their fuller interpretation.

Plato is a philosophical writer of unusual and impressive versatility. His dialogues not only engage in argument but also abound in allegory, myth and paradox, with clearly characterised participants set against a particular historical context. This engrossing book shows how Plato's literary qualities are crucial to understanding his philosophy.

Physicochemical mechanics is a modern theoretical framework that can be used to model physicochemical processes, based on well-known concepts taken from classical mechanics. This self-contained book provides a detailed summary of this theoretical approach and its many useful applications in biological physics, biochemistry and chemical engineering.

  • - Biological Sequence Analysis in the Era of High-Throughput Sequencing
av Veli Makinen, Alexandru I. Tomescu, Fabio Cunial & m.fl.
    774,-

High-throughput sequencing has revolutionised the field of biological sequence analysis. Its application has enabled researchers to address important biological questions, often for the first time. This book provides an integrated presentation of the fundamental algorithms and data structures that power modern sequence analysis workflows. The topics covered range from the foundations of biological sequence analysis (alignments and hidden Markov models), to classical index structures (k-mer indexes, suffix arrays and suffix trees), Burrows-Wheeler indexes, graph algorithms and a number of advanced omics applications. The chapters feature numerous examples, algorithm visualisations, exercises and problems, each chosen to reflect the steps of large-scale sequencing projects, including read alignment, variant calling, haplotyping, fragment assembly, alignment-free genome comparison, transcript prediction and analysis of metagenomic samples. Each biological problem is accompanied by precise formulations, providing graduate students and researchers in bioinformatics and computer science with a powerful toolkit for the emerging applications of high-throughput sequencing.

This Element concerns itself with a particular aspect of the problem posed to monotheistic religious thought by suffering, namely the suffering of non-human creatures in nature. It makes some comparisons between Judaism, Christianity, and Islam, and then explores the problem in depth within Christian thought.
