That James Joyce's "The Dead" forms an extraordinary conclusion to his collection Dubliners, there can be no doubt. But as many have pointed out, "The Dead" may equally well be read as a novella--arguably, one of the finest novellas ever written. "The Dead," a "story of public life," as Joyce categorized it, was written more than a year after Joyce had finished the other stories in the collection, and was meant to redress what he felt was their "unnecessary harsh[ness]." Her struggles are as much economic as they are sexual, and include encounters with a wide variety of amorous but unsatisfactory men. Michael Field" was the literary pseudonym of two women, Katharine Bradley (1846-1914) and her niece Edith Cooper (1862-1913). The women were poets, playwrights, diarist, and lovers who lived and wrote together during the final decades of the nineteenth century up to World War I.
