"Patricians, Professors, and Public Schools argues that the thinking behind efforts to reform American schools in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries emphasized two new ideas -- that economic growth and the opportunity it created were more limited than had earlier been thought, and that popular aspirations should be revised downward accordingly.After discussing the thinking that reformers reacted against in the first chapter of the book, later chapters examine those most responsible for these new ideas, especially Felix Adler and John Dewey. These chapters argue that reformers' fears about the social dislocation stemming from economic growth makes the most sense of the educational redirection they promoted.This is a new interpretation of developments that have long been debated by American historians, and should be of interest to a wide variety of readers.

Modern writers and scholars from the Islamic East have represented actual or fictional encounters with the West in a surprising variety of ways. Far from constituting a mono- lithic approach to the West, as Western "Orientalism" often tended to, these writings reveal an interest in and sometimes acute perception of cross-cultural conflict and synthesis. The very difficulties experienced by writers and critics immersed in two or more cultures have led to new creative and innovative forms of response to the West. By shifting focus in East-West relations towards the East, it initiates further interdisciplinary discussions.

The "New Papyrological Primer" is a fully revised and expanded edition of David and Groningen's 1964 standard introduction to Greek papyrological texts. The current edition contains 81 Greek texts, arranged in a chronological order, which illustrate various aspects of life in Hellenistic, Roman and Byzantine Egypt. Each text is provided with a short commentary and explanatory notes, which aim to allow students to understand the text and to place it accurately in its social context. A lengthy introduction provides general background information, data about the texts examined and discussion of a number of commonly neglected topics. A glossary of Greek terms is appended. The work contains numerous plates, illustrations and maps.
