This book examines the development of Indonesian nationalism from the viewpoint of a minority: the urban Christian elite. Placed between the Indonesian nationalist promise of freedom and the (equally Christian) Dutch colonial promise of modernity, their experience of late colonialism was filled with dilemma and ambiguity. Rather than describe dry institutions, this study traces the lives of five politically active Indonesian Christians, both Catholic and Protestant, spanning the late colonial, Japanese occupation and early independence periods: Amir Sjarifoeddin, Bishop Soegijapranata, Kasimo, Moelia and Ratu Langie. For most of them the main problem was not so much the protest against colonialism, but the transition to more modern forms of political community. Their status as a religious minority, and as urban middle class 'migrants' out of their traditional communities, made them more aware that achieving moral consensus was problematic.

Jakarta, Sambas, Poso, the Moluccas, West Papua. These simple, geographical names have recently obtained strong associations with mass killing, just as Aceh and East Timor, where large-scale violence has flared up again. Lethal incidents between adjacent villages, or between a petty criminal and the crowd, take place throughout Indonesia. Indonesia is a violent country. Many Indonesia-watchers, both scholars and journalists, explain the violence in terms of the loss of the monopoly on the means of violence by the state since the beginning of the Reformasi in 1998. Others point at the omnipresent remnants of the New Order state (1966-1998), former President Suharto's clan or the army in particular, as the evil genius behind the present bloodshed. The authors in this volume try to explain violence in Indonesia by looking at it in historical perspective.

These events are well known, even to casual observers, but Kees van Dijk has penned a magnificent account of Indonesia between 1997 and 2000 that fleshes out the story in rich detail and analysis. By analyzing Flavius Josephus' portrayal of the Pharisees, this study clarifies some of the crucial evidence that is necessary for scholars to evaluate anew the history of the Pharisees. Included in the discussion is Josephus' writings about the group in three of his four extant works. Author Philip Reynolds examines how marriage acquired a specifically Christian identity in the Latin West during the first millennium after Christ. The Dead Sea Scrolls Translated comprises an extensive preface outlining the origin of the manuscripts and the aims of the translation. The translation of the manuscripts is organized into nine chapters, each with one or two pages of introduction. It concludes with an exhaustive list of all manuscripts discovered at Qumran. The formula 'for the life of' is often found in votive inscriptions, cast in Aramaic and other languages, which originate from the Syrian-Mesopotamian desert and adjacent areas and which roughly date from the first three centuries A.D. They belong to objects like statues and altars that usually were erected in temples and other structures with a ritual or sacred function. The inscriptions establish a relationship between the dedicator and one or more beneficiaries, those persons for whose life the dedication was made.Since the social context evidently bears on both the meaning of the inscriptions as well as the status of the dedications, this volume deals with the nature of the relationships and the socio-religious function the dedications perform.

This volume deals with the architectural history of the theatre in Roman Palestine and Provincia Arabia. The first part provides the historical-cultural background and seeks to explain the significance of theatres in a region which had no classical roots. Part two contains a comprehensive architectural analysis, richly illustrated, of each of the thirty theatres so far uncovered in the area.

On his death, Felix Jacoby left uncompleted the original plan for his massive and now standard compilation: "Die Fragmente der griechischen Historiker. Not only was he unable to complete his commentary to Volume III C, but no parts of three whole sections foreseen in the original plan were ever published.Jacoby did however leave behind a considerable Nachlass of more than 1200 pages of notes and outlines relating to his commentary to FGrHist Volume III C. Charles Fornara is undertaking the task of publishing in fascicles Jacoby's text (sometimes with minor modifications), making additions of his own (between brackets). In writing this commentary Professor Fornara has tried to follow the stylistic conventions which Jacoby preferred and has done his best to emulate his general approach. This first part of the work deals with Graeco-Egyptian sources (Nos. 608a-665). Once this is completed, Professor Fornara will write a general introduction to the Graeco-Egyptian segment, including part of what Jacoby had written. It is anticipated that the work will comprise 8 fascicles and will be completed before 2005.An international venture is now also underway to prepare and publish two of the sections which Jacoby had planned but never managed to publish.Part IV (Biography, history of literature and antiquarian literature) will be undertaken by a team including J.
