This collection of essays assesses the legacy established by the most important international criminal tribunal since the Nuremberg and Tokyo war crimes trials, and considers what might be done to enhance or modify the legacy of the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY), including improvement of the capacity of state courts in the region to prosecute violations of humanitarian law by using the Tribunal's documents, evidence, law, and practice.The essays are derived from a conference, Assessing the Legacy of the ICTY, which was convened in The Hague. Participants included over 375 stakeholders from the former Yugoslavia; officials from the Tribunal's Chambers, Registry, and the Office of the Prosecutor; justice ministers and other government officials from Europe; and all elements of civil society--representatives of nongovernmental organizations, lawyers, and academics.

Genizat Germania is a project at the Johannes Gutenberg University in Mainz focused on the search for and analysis of Hebrew and Aramaic binding fragments found in the books and files of archives and libraries. In recent years this systematic search has revealed several hundred new fragments, including some rare Talmudic, Midrashic and liturgical fragments. The new discoveries both in Germany and elsewhere in Europe have broadened the knowledge of Jewish literature in the Middle Ages and Early Modern periods. This volume collects the papers of international scholars which cover recent discoveries in Germany, the European Genizah or fragments found in Italy, Poland, Great Britain and Austira, the approaches of similar projects in Austria and the Czech Republic, as well as an extensive bibliography.

Traditional Monster Imagery in Manga, Anime and Japanese Cinema builds on the earlier volume Anime and its Roots in Early Japanese Monster Art, that aimed to position contemporary Japanese animation within a wider art historical context by tracing the development of monster representations in Edo- and Meiji-period art works and post-war visual media. While the previous volume concentrated on modern media representations, this work focuses on how Western art historical concepts and methodology might be adapted when considering non-Western works, introducing traditional monster art in more detail, while also maintaining its links to post-war animation, sequential art and Japanese cinema. Abraham Abulafia (1240 c. 1291) founded an enormously influential branch of Jewish mysticism, referred to as the prophetic or ecstatic kabbalah. This book, from several perspectives, explores the impact of Christianity upon Abulafia. His copious writings evince an intense fascination with Christian themes, yet Abulafia s frequent diatribes against Jesus and Christianity reveal him to be deeply conflicted in his relationship to his southern European religious neighbors. This book undertakes a careful study of Abulafia s writings, suggesting that the recognition of an inner dynamic of attraction and revulsion toward the forbidden other provides a crucial key to understanding Abulafia s mystical hermeneutic and his meditative practice. It also demonstrates that Abulafia's uneasy relationship to Christianity shaped the very core of his mystical doctrine.

This book is about a Muslim Shi'i philosopher of the early 16th century, Najm al-Din Mahmud al-Nayrizi. Educated in Shiraz, he became interested in Avicennan and Suhrawardian philosophy. With the publication of this ninth volume in the Treatise on Zoology: The Crustacea, we depart from the sequence one would normally expect. Some crustacean groups never had a French version produced, namely, the orders Stomatopoda, Euphausiacea, Amphionidacea, and Decapoda; the largest contingent of these involved Decapoda a group of tremendous diversity and for which we have great depth of knowledge. The organization and production of these new chapters began independently from the other chapters and volumes. Originally envisioned by the editorial team to encompass volume 9 of the series, it quickly became evident that the depth of material for such a volume must involve the printing of separate fascicles. These new chapters are now nearing completion, and the decision was made to begin publication of volume 9 immediately rather than wait until after volumes 3 through 8 would appear.
