The Risāle-i Mi'māriyye by Ca'fer Efendi is the most extensive and detailed Ottoman literary source devoted to a particular architect. In addition to being an account of the life and works of the imperial architect Mehmed Ağa, builder of the Sultan Ahmed Complex in Istanbul, it serves to suggest something of the general character and career evolution of the entire class of Ottoman imperial architects of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries and includes as well a trilingual glossary of terms related to architecture. With the exception of the more abridged teẕkeres of Mustafa Sa'i Çelebi dealing with Sinan, the Risāle-i Mi'māriyye is the only systematic Ottoman account of the life an imperial architect known to exist.

The nineteen papers collected in this volume were delivered at a symposium held in Toronto, November 1989 in order to discuss the art and culture of Timurid times. The papers cover the last decades of the fourteenth century and the whole of the fifteenth, in an area of western Asia extending roughly from the Euphrates to the Hindu Kush and to the Altai.

"Ik ben slechts geboren om het treurige leven te schilderen in romans vol bitterheid. Vreugde wordt altijd besproeid door tranen, als uit de altijd voortgolvende Zuidelijke Zee, als uit de hemel in de regentijd, bedekt met dichte wolken en mist", schreef hij in 1934 in de inleiding tot een van zijn romans. Liefde en geluk horen niet bij elkaar. Njoo Cheong Seng is een van de vele--sindsdien vergeten--schrijvers van Chinese komaf die in de laat-koloniale tijd een aanzienlijk lezerspubliek aan zich wisten te binden met verhalen waarin op een bewust sentimentele, maar realistische wijze pijnlijke problemen en toestanden in de koloniale samenleving aan de orde werden gesteld in een schijnbaar onzorgvuldig maar daardoor levendig Maleis. Het is veelzeggend dat het leven in die samenlevingen in Njoo's visie voortdurend door tranen en treurnis wordt beheerst en dat alle vriendschappen en liefdesrelaties tot mislukken zijn gedoemd. Over the past 50 years, major changes have taken place in the distribution of aquatic plants in Europe. Many species have declined whilst other species have increased in abundance or spread, including several that were originally introduced from the New World.
