In 1973, McComb, Mississippi, emerged from a troubled era of the civil rights movement as a small town ready to move past Jim Crow laws and segregation. Young families began to settle in the southwest Mississippi community, including one such family from Oklahoma, Larry and Pat Hicks, and their two young sons, Clark and Matt. Life in the 1970s and 80s in a quaint Southern hamlet became a breeding ground for stories of wit and charm. In the early 1990s, oldest son Clark married his high school sweetheart. The newlyweds moved eighty miles east to Hattiesburg, a thriving mid-size college town where a new generation of Hicks boys were born and raised. The expanded family in the "Hub City" of southeast Mississippi nestled into the fabric of a rapidly changing Southern culture, where tradition and technology created a fertile environment for storytelling reminiscent of an age long ago. Part memoir, part history, the book consists of short story vignettes sure to entertain all readers, particularly those who have connections to the Magnolia State.
A bullied young man, Cauley Christian, develops a relationship with a very intelligent crow named Sawtok. Together they plot vengeful actions to be carried out against the boy's enemies. With the crow's help and some assistance from his seemingly stupid best friend, Cauley strikes out at individuals who have wronged him. These acts and something very different about Cauley catch the attention of a very smart and beautiful classmate who feels a strange connection to the boy.Things get more involved when the leader of the Freemen, a doomsday group, starts to mentor Cauley and his violent plans escalate. The authorities get into the mix, including the FBI, but so far, their efforts to catch the responsible parties have had no success. Can anything or anyone stop this young man's spiraling attraction to violence and his growing plans to expand his horizons.
Thousands have written about Jesus Christ, the best-known figure in history. Aside from the New Testament words recorded by the people who knew him, his life is a mystery. Theologians and scholars of multiple disciplines have given us learned insight.Speculators have him married, traveling to Gaul and China and one casts him as a Japanese rice farmer. What about his boyhood years, the trials of a teenager, education, a boy mourning the death of his grandparents and later suffering the loss of his earthly father? How do you run a carpentry business? What about the challenges of a young human Jesus growing into his divinity? "Jesus: The Untold Story" suggests some answers. Simon Peter is the opening chapter narrator, and one gets the sense that he and Mary, Jesus' mother, are not on the best of terms. Then Mary becomes the narrator, and her discussion with Jesus is laden with foreboding. The story then goes back to Egypt where the Holy Family has lived for nearly four years. Joseph learns that Herod the Great has died, and they head back to Nazareth. However, the Herod paranoia and power hang over much of their life thereafter. It's an adventurous trip home but good friends and Jesus' recall about a dog's habits are key.Once back in Nazareth, Jesus deals with the usual elements of growing up in First Century Galilean culture - education of the Hebrew Scriptures, making friends, playing games and doing chores. He suffers the death of grandparents and later the demise of his earthly father. His teen years involve running in relays, more studying of Jewish Scripture and learning the rudiments of carpentry. While training for a race at nearby Nain, he meets a girl from Synagogue. That and a growing sense of his divine destiny created new challenges. After Joseph died, the son of a carpenter had a business to run. As his ministry progressed, there were not only disappointments in developing his kingdom on Earth - such as real love for one's brother and forgiveness - but the arguing among his disciples. In the end, there is the anguish of the unknown. Mary prays that the final days will not be the horror that she imagines. She accepts Simon, renamed Peter, as the leader of the Apostles, the Rock.

The Truth has the unmatched power to see through and defeat every lie, shaded truth, and misdirection of humanity. In life, truth stands on its own when all of the facts have been presented because, ultimately, the truth always traces its origin to the Source of all truth: the eternal, omniscient, and holy triune God described in the Bible. The second person of the Trinity, Jesus Christ, is indeed The Way, the Life, and THE Truth, according to John 14:6. Everything in God's Word confirms that claim, and nothing contradicts it.If this absolutely unique Divine Person -- the God-man -- embodies the truth to the extent that He can rightly be called THE Truth, we have before our eyes the most-reliable source of truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth. As eternal, holy God Himself (John 1:1-3, Colossians 1:15-17, Hebrews 1:1-2), and because God can NOT lie (Titus 1:2), Jesus Christ is the most-faithful witness to the truth that there ever could be. Why should we rely on the ignorance, incomplete knowledge (at best), and lies of sinful, finite creatures? Only those men who spoke and recorded the Holy-Spirit-inspired words of the books of the Bible were given God's stamp of approval and seal of certification that their words matched and proceeded from God.So in addition to the Lord Jesus Christ Himself, we can add to the number of truly faithful witnesses those select few who were genuinely inspired by the Holy Spirit to be the "stenographers" of The Scriptures. But that's where we must draw the line, because diligent truth-seekers have nothing to gain by going beyond that boundary. The reality is that anyone can make predictions about the future and not one person in our earthly realm actually knows what will happen or when. That's the dividing line between knowing the future (and the past as well) and engaging in guesswork about it. The truth descends to us from God's eternal throne, and by His grace, we finite human beings can come upon even the most astonishing facts of creation (as He wills). On the other side of the divide, we humans of limited understanding and imagination will soon hit our largely self-imposed ceiling; pride keeps us from going to God for the knowledge that can break through the barriers. For far too many, if something must come from God, we don't want it. Man by nature rejects God's provision, whether that pertains to things needed to live in safety and prosperity on earth, or far worse, the ultimate provision of The Way to eternal Life in the person and work of The Savior, Jesus Christ. To the Christ-rejecter, the worst offense of all is a life of holiness. The Christ-follower, then, is the natural enemy of the unbeliever, and the only one within reach of their hatred. If this doesn't fully explain their hatred toward Christians (because of Jesus, who lived the ONLY perfectly holy life), it can certainly cover the main ground. However, to reciprocate with hate is not God's way, so let's get back to the duties of the Christian: to acknowledge, trust in, and follow Jesus Christ, The Way to the Father in Heaven. The title of this book clearly proclaims a specific Person as the Faithful and True Witness: Jesus Christ, the God-man.That descriptive phrase is taken from Revelation 3:14, but there is actually another word that precedes it: "These things says The AMEN, the Faithful and True Witness." On page 9 of this work can be found a short treatment of the connection between the Bible's use of "Amen" in the Old Testament and "Faithful" in the New Testament. The conclusion is intuitive and firm: Both terms in their essence indicate "Yes, yes, it is (or will be) so" and "Absolutely, it's a done deal!" in the expressions of two different times. If God says what will happen and when, the occurrence will unfailingly verify the prophecy! Amen!
To be sure, many men have accomplished much more in a two-year time span than this author, but probably not many so diverse as to what is recorded here. This memoir covers Dan's adventures in 1976 through 1978 while in his mid 40s. The title stems from his multiple sailboat races, including the exciting 1976 Transpacific yacht race to Hawaii, and his hot busy sandy years in Saudi Arabia working for IBM Corporation. He served as an expat at the giant ARAMCO oil company helping to manage their complex data processing needs. The book includes some Middle Eastern history, information about Islam and the Qur'an, plus a few trips to surrounding countries such as Kashmir, India, central Iran, France, and Northern Europe. A few love affairs are mentioned without too many details.
The bloody War of Revolution sparks a new democracy in the British colonies and makes household names of Washington, Adams, and Jefferson. As the century comes to a close, legendary rider Paul Revere forges a unique medallion in the fires of Boston. Decades later, another rebellion grips the land, splitting the fledgling country asunder. As the North and South collide in a devastating civil war, the Revere medallion rises from the ashes to spark a new generation of American heroes. When patriotic fever sweeps the country, Paul's grandson marches into battle with the famed Harvard regiment but he finds the horrors of war a steep price to pay for glory. A Southern belle must decide where her true loyalties lie when faced with the ultimate choice. A young officer struggles to maintain his principles as Robert E. Lee pushes toward Gettysburg, and he must wrestle with the true meaning of freedom. As the battles rage around them, the three must learn to adapt as politics and prejudice undermine Lincoln's hope for salvation.Uniting the trio in the greatest conflict America has ever faced is the famed Revere medallion and the special strength it gives to those who possess it. Three men and women are tested to their breaking points as they must learn to face their fears and find a way to save their beloved country against insurmountable odds.
It's murder in the worst degree when an executive at a knife factory is killed with its newest product, a curved blade called the tiger claw. Was Sam Park murdered because of the "private project" he was working on, one that threatened to expose dirty secrets? Ominous message fragments only deepen the mystery. Most perplexing of all is why the dead man's outstretched hand is resting on the open page of a world atlas. Was he naming his killer? All is not as it seems as Detectives Henry Lau and Janet Lau try to answer these and other questions, leading them to a startling revelation that undercuts everything they thought they knew in a puzzling investigation Henry refers to as "very Agatha Christie."Elements of the murder recall challenging moments from Henry's distant past. Meanwhile, Janet, his niece and work partner, deals with the aftereffects of a concussion that she struggles to keep from affecting her work on the investigation.

Many times in life, the unexpected happens to us, or to someone else, and many times it is a tragic incident. In 2017 our youngest son took his own life. It was unexpected. It was a complete surprise. To us, he seemed to be living a full, God-honoring life. How do you explain such a tragedy? How do you explain that unexpected tragedy in your life? There is a reason for that, which is explained in the Bible. This book will help you make sense out of things, which ordinarily, in your human understanding, makes no sense. Using the Bible as our guide, we will pull back the curtain of the unexpected and find not only answers, but hope that will help you to cope with your shock and grief. This book contains answers to questions about life's incidents and tragedies we can't explain in human terms. We will draw the curtain back on God's perspective and plan, and the spiritual warfare that is at play in all our lives. We cannot always see behind the scenes when events happen, but this book will give you hope and healing in knowing that God is in control and has a plan in it all.

Given that her adoptive parents plucked an abandoned three-week-old child out of a local Christmas diorama, it is no surprise that, after her mother died and her father was murdered, Alicia Cruz McCall did not grow to be a normal teenage girl. When her uncle Harper, retired U.S. Special Forces, noticed her steely nerve and split-second reflexes, he encouraged his niece to join him and complete her training. While her former classmates were sipping caffe macchiatos and trading gossip at the mall, Cruz McCall was stalking-and matter-of-factly eliminating her enemies.Determined to conceal her vocation from those around her, McCall developed an alternative identity as an oil painter. When her landscapes and portraits turned out to be as sharp as her trigger finger, she became a highly successful artist who had to work harder to separate the two worlds.Eventually, the stress of repeatedly trading a paintbrush for a handgun caused Cruz to make a rare misstep, becoming the hostage of a dangerous adversary. With the help of her street-smart partner, Juan Mendoza, she clawed her way to freedom. But her quest for retribution had just begun. She must exact vengeance on the responsible party... before he strikes again.
This is a book that could provide academia and anyone in the areas of Sociology, Business, Political Science, Public Administration, Policy and Law an example of how a government agency is created, functions and evolves.I wanted to give a sociological, public administrative and business view into the details of how a government idea is born of necessity.I also wanted to give an example of how stresses and powers contribute to the character of an agency.I also wanted to illustrate how an agency evolves, succeeds and sustains through changing times, to remain relevant. This social science book is written from the perspective of an author that is a Bachelor's in Sociology and a Master's in Public Administration Management graduate. The author has also had experience working in both the private sector and government sector combined for over twenty-five years plus at the time of this publication. The author has completed research projects and admires the theory and related research of functionalism, in terms of how society has structure and order that can be researched using social science.
Richard Bryan of Mt. Lebanon, Louisiana was the consummate idealist. He had a forward-looking outlook. Slavery was an anachronism. In 1856, five years before the war, he offered emancipation to all 97 on his plantation, hired a teacher, deeded land, shared profits, and encouraged entrepreneurs. The Civil War devastated the South, but the war never reached his home. When Union occupiers arrived in Mt. Lebanon a decade later, they were astounded to find Bryan's experiment fully implemented. Former slaves could not only "read, write, and cipher," they were landowners engaged in a trade, and some were even bilingual.Bryan's objective was to facilitate the "conveyance" of his peaceful society from pre-war to post-war America. He saw no reason why he could not achieve this goal. Union occupiers envisioned a plethora of beneficial propaganda, but Bryan declined to be used by aggressive new politicians who demanded his cooperation to further their agenda. After the Confederate surrender, Richard Bryan, his family, their hired hands, the people, and a wounded Yankee deserter his young sons had stumbled upon in the woods and brought home with them, found themselves at the mercy of a corrupt Governor, political hacks, petty tyrants, and remorseless convicts in military uniform. Not just rustlers but occupying troops would frequently raid farms. Often, they'd steal entire harvests. If you resisted the men in uniform, they might hang you and burn your place down out of spite. There was no legal recourse against the government. Food became scarce, hard money even more so. "Injun Grass" as it was known to those who smoked it, grew wild on their land. It was good quality, so they'd periodically harvest it and offer little poke bags of cannabis sativa for sale to visitors who were passing through on the stagecoach. Occasionally they'd even sell some to soldiers. Every penny counted. They tightened their belts, quietly bartered for weapons, secretly manufactured ammunition, and killed in self-defense when they were faced with no other choice.Their joint goal was survival. Some of them would make it.What transpired across the South might today be equated to legal, as well as militarized police brutality by occupying forces. The experience of all, regardless of color, who lived through this traumatic and tumultuous time in history, burned itself deeply into America's collective psyche.
