Also available from Cosimo Classics: The Advanced Course in Personal Magnetism, by Theron Q. Dumont. American writer WILLIAM WALKER ATKINSON (1862-1932)-aka Theron Q. Dumont-was born in Baltimore and had built up a successful law practice in Pennsylvania before professional burnout led him to the religious New Thought movement. He served as editor of the popular magazine New Thought from 1901 to 1905, and as editor of the journal Advanced Thought from 1916 to 1919. He authored dozens of New Thought books-including Arcane Formula or Mental Alchemy and Vril, or Vital Magnetism-under numerous pseudonyms, some of which are likely still unknown today.

本書的基礎是我於2011年10月在北京師範大學的系列講座。 講座的主題有很多，但是，它們都圍繞一個核心問題：認識、主體和文化在當代世界裡是如何改變的。這是個"知識文明"的世界，新技術的世界，風險不斷增加的世界，普遍的全球化世界，對人的身體與心理的變異進行規劃的世界。我嘗試表明，傳統的哲學問題----理性的本質，關於自然界的科學與關於人的科學之間的相互關係，認識與活動的相互關係，哲學的作用和功能等，在今天已經處在意想不到的視角裡，並要求新的反思，有時候要求對已經習慣的觀念進行重新考察。現代文明進入到社會發展的這樣一個階段，科學在其中開始發揮新的作用。科學製造出新型技術，後者影響經濟和所有社會與文化過程，同時還在改變一般的"生活世界"。但是，如果哲學與科學在最近三百年時間裡一直密切地聯繫在一起，如果今天的科學與技術（被稱為"技術科學"的新綜合體）一起改變"生活世界"自身，那麼，今天的哲學在對各類極端改變的反思中發揮著絕無僅有的作用，這些極端改變發生在世界上，也發生在對新實在最優化的反應途徑的制定方面。 在自己建構設計領域，人面臨著新領域的發現，同時也面對著新的危險。這些問題與人的未來有直接關係，對它們的討論需要一個前提，就是人不在世界之外存在，而是融入在世界裡，因此應該考慮到人在其中嘗試要干預的那些過程的複雜性，在很多情況下，要考慮到它們的不可預測性。純粹是工程的，幼稚的技術統治論立場既是危險的，也是不可能的。 今天的哲學不應該僅僅是一小撮專家的事情，普通人對它也應該越來越感興趣。我的這些講座考慮到這個問題的。 在北京師範大學講課對我而言是個有趣的和有教益的經歷：聽眾非常敏感，他們提的問題專業而深刻。 感謝中國同事們對我的關心。我特別要感謝我的朋友張百春教授，沒有他充滿奉獻精神的積極努力，無論是我在北京的這些講座，還是本書的出版都是不可能的。 列克托爾斯基
