خرج من المنزل وهو يجر ذيول الهزيمة، وقد تراكمت أحزان الدنيا في قلبه المكلوم، فبالأمس كان يبحث عن طريقة يمهد بها الطريق إلى قلب وصال، أما اليوم فقد أصبحت من الماضي، ولم يعد هناك أمل بوصالها، فقد تدخل القدر وحرمه منها. راح يسير في الشوارع على غير هدى، يبكي تارة، ويحبس دموعه تارة أخرى، لكنها لا تلبث أن تدمّر الحاجز الهش الذي بناه حولها، لتفيض أنهاراً من الألم والبؤس. لم يكن راغباً بالتوجه إلى المستشفى، خاصة وأن سمير لا يزال راقداً هناك، لا يدري ما بحل بزوجته الفاتنة، كما أن العودة إلى المنزل كانت فكرة سيئة للغاية، فكيف يمكن أن يخفي أحزانه عن زوجته. سار لأكثر من ساعتين، حتى انهار من التعب، لكنه وجد ساقيه تقودانه إلى منزل صديقه مازن، علّه يجد عنده بعض المواساة أو على الاقل يؤمن له ملاذاً يؤويه في محنته التي كان مضطراً أن يخفيها عن الجميع.

وصلتُ الى المنزل قبله، زالت رعشة يدي ونلت من السكينة بعض الشيء، فكرت كثيراً في الأسباب التي دعته إلى الدخول الى المسرح والبحث عني بهذه الطريقة، لم اجد سوى ادغال الشك التي باتت تنمو في رأسه بعدما اعتدتُ العودة الى المنزل بوقتٍ متأخر، دخلتُ مسرعة وغيرتُ ثيابي بأُخرى تنال رضاه، ارتديت ثياب النوم كأنني كُنت بانتظاره والشوق يأسرني، بادرت لأجهز طاولة عشاء بأطباقٍ يسيرة التحضير، اوقدت شمعتين كاذبتين تدعيان الحُب، وجلست بانتظاره، كنت مطمئنةً من الخدم وحارس الباب، هددتهم بالسجن ما إن أخبروا (شريف) يوماً عن خروجي في الليل. دخل مُسرعاً فرأى انتظاري والوقار المزيف الذي كسوت به وجهي، ابتسم كأنهُ انتصر في الحرب على ألدّ اعدائه، فرح لأنه انتصر على شكهِ بيقينٍ واهن، القى عليّ تحيتَهُ بدفء، رأيتُ يدَهُ مُتسخة، سألتهُ وهو يدخل ليُغير ثيابه عن أسباب ذلك فأجابني بأنهُ وجد احدى عجلات سيارته مطعونةً بسكينٍ صغيرة، ولم يجد من يساعده في الشارع فقام بتغييرها بنفسه، كَذب عليّ، مثلما اكذبُ عليه، لكلينا كان كذبته، إلا أن احداهُن كانت لا تُغتفر، نجوت بأعجوبة، إلا أن قلبي ظل يخفق الدم الأسود.
