Mary Augusta Ward CBE (née Arnold; 11 June 1851 - 24 March 1920) was a British novelist who wrote under her married name as Mrs Humphry Ward. She worked to improve education for the poor and she became the founding President of the Women''s National Anti-Suffrage League. Ward began her career writing articles for Macmillan''s Magazine while working on a book for children that was published in 1881 under the title Milly and Olly. This was followed in 1884 by a more ambitious, though slight, study of modern life, Miss Bretherton, the story of an actress. Ward''s novels contained strong religious subject matter relevant to Victorian values she herself practised. Her popularity spread beyond Great Britain to the United States.

Rosa Campbell Praed (1851-1935), often credited as Mrs Campbell Praed (and also known as Rosa Caroline Praed), was an Australian novelist. Her large bibliography covered multiple genres, and books for children as well as adults. She has been described as the first Australian novelist to achieve a significant international reputation. Rosa had a passion for reading and writing from childhood. Many of her early experiences were used for the political and social life of her early books. In 1880 she published her first book, An Australian Heroine. This book was followed by Policy and Passion (1881), one of the best of her earlier books. A large proportion of her novels were based on her Australian experiences. Others dealt with the occult, with spiritualism, or with abnormal states of mind.

This reference work on the Psalter was composed by St. Augustine of Hippo (354 - 430 AD) in the 5th century. St. Augustine was a well-regarded theologian and philosopher, and he served as a bishop in Roman North Africa. His writings greatly influenced the development of Western philosophy. Among his many famous works are, "The City of God," "On Christian Doctrine," and "Confessions." During his lifetime he dedicated himself to the considerable task of drawing up a commentary on the Psalms, the longest book of the Bible. This first volume covers psalms 1 - 20 and is illustrated with images of King David, and other Biblical figures mentioned in the commentary. The text itself is taken from, "A select library of the Nicene and Post-Nicene Fathers of the Christian church / [First series] / Philip Schaff (1819 - 1893) Vol. 8, Saint Augustin: Expositions on the book of psalms / transl. with notes and indices; New York: The Christian literature company, 1888." Giovanni Carmelo Verga (2 September 1840 - 27 January 1922) was an Italian realist (verista) writer, best known for his depictions of life in his native Sicily, especially the short story (and later play) Cavalleria rusticana [it] and the novel I Malavoglia (The House by the Medlar Tree). He began writing in his teens, producing the largely unpublished, but currently quite famous, historical novel Amore e Patria (Love and Country); then, although nominally studying law at the University of Catania, he used money his father had given him to publish his I carbonari della montagna (The Carbonari of the Mountain) in 1861 and 1862. This was followed by Sulle lagune (On the Lagoons) in 1863.

A full member of the Royal Society of British Artists, Orlando Greenwood (1892-1989) was a brilliant and talented artist. But until now there was no indication that he had ever illustrated verses of the Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam. An unexpected discovery of pictures in a box of his work, purchased at an auction by Jo Briony brought this work to light. The black and white images were done when he was a 21- to 22-year-old student at Goldsmiths'' College of Art. Greenwood appears to have felt a close relationship with the poetry because he used his face to represent Omar Khayyam in one picture. For the first time Orlando Greenwood''s Rubaiyat imagery is presented in book form. The 6"x9", softcover book features nine of his illustrations plus a frontispiece image. It also explains the serendipitous discovery of these pictures and sheds some insight into Greenwood''s life and the selection of quatrains he illustrated.
