This is the OCR-endorsed edition covering the Latin A-Level (Group 2) prescription of Annals XIV, 1-13, giving full Latin text, commentary and vocabulary, with a detailed introduction that also covers the prescribed material to be read in English for A Level.Tacitus is one of the great Roman historians. His Annals, written in the early-2nd century CE, described the reigns of the Roman Emperors Tiberius, Gaius, Claudius and Nero, covering the years 14-68 CE. In this selection he provides a memorable vignette of Nero's decadence and cruelty in the failed and then successful murder of his own mother, Agrippina. The drama of Nero's reign must be read in the context of Tacitus' perspective as an author writing within living memory of the events he describes, events which shaped the further development of imperial rule.Supporting resources are available on the Companion Website: https://www.bloomsbury.pub/OCR-editions-2024-2026

This is the OCR-endorsed edition covering the Latin A-Level (Group 2) prescription of Pliny, Letters 1.9; 3.16; 4.2; 4.19; 8.8; 8.16; 8.17; 9.6, giving full Latin text, commentary and vocabulary, with a detailed introduction that also covers the prescribed material to be read in English. The letters of Pliny the Younger provide a glimpse of what life at the start of the 2nd century AD was like for a member of the Roman elite, offering some insight into his roles and responsibilities, his daily concerns, and relationships both personal and professional. This wide-ranging selection includes letters of advice and praise, meditations on death and slavery, descriptions of nature or natural phenomena, and even disapproval of the Roman public's obsession with chariot-racing. Pliny shows various sides to his character and demonstrates his skill in writing, carefully constructing the persona he wants to project to posterity.Supporting resources are available on the Companion Website: https://www.bloomsbury.pub/OCR-editions-2024-2026

This is the OCR-endorsed edition covering the Latin A-Level (Group 4) prescription of Ovid, Fasti 2.533-616, 687-852, giving full Latin text, commentary and vocabulary, with a detailed introduction that also covers the prescribed material to be read in English. Ovid's Fasti is a fascinating poem, which discusses key events in the Roman religious calendar, along with their mythological and historical origins. As such it provides a remarkable opportunity for readers to experience the intersection of poetry and Roman 'socio-cultural values'. These extracts from Fasti II include the story of Hercules and Omphale, along with one of the most famous tales from Roman history, the story of Lucretia and the ensuing expulsion of the Roman Kings and creation of the Republic. Through his treatment of this latter narrative in particular, Ovid is not only playing with historical tradition, but also asking his Roman readers to perceive the echoes of the past in their present experiences.Supporting resources are available on the Companion Website: https://www.bloomsbury.pub/OCR-editions-2024-2026

This is the OCR-endorsed edition covering the Latin AS and A-Level (Group 3) prescription of Virgil's Aeneid Book 2, lines 40-249 and the A-Level (Group 4) prescription of Book 2, lines 268-317, 370-558, giving full Latin text, commentary and vocabulary, with a detailed introduction that also covers the prescribed material to be read in English for A Level. Book II of Virgil's Aeneid is the story of how Troy fell and how Aeneas escaped with his family and his city's gods. It is a narrative relayed in retrospect by Aeneas as a refugee at the court of Queen Dido in Carthage, and the OCR selection covers the book's first two thirds: the Wooden Horse episode, and the chaos which ensues - including the dramatic murder of King Priam. Virgil depicts war in all its ugly complexity, and Aeneas' response to this - as combatant in Troy, as exile in Carthage - is central to the poem's early exposition.Supporting resources are available on the Companion Website: https://www.bloomsbury.pub/OCR-editions-2024-2026

This is the OCR-endorsed edition covering the Latin AS and A-Level (Group 3) prescription of Juvenal, Satire 6 and the A-Level (Group 4) prescription of Satires 14 and 15, giving full Latin text, commentary and vocabulary, with a detailed introduction that also covers the prescribed material to be read in English for A Level. Juvenal was the last and the greatest of the Roman verse satirists and his poetry gives us an exuberant and outrageously jaundiced view of the early Roman Empire. This book contains a selection from three of his satires: Satire 6 attacks women and marriage, Satire 14 critiques the role played by parents in the education of children and Satire 15 describes all too vividly the cannibalism perpetrated by warring Egyptians. These Satires expose the folly and the wickedness of the world in some of the finest Latin to have survived from antiquity.Supporting resources are available on the Companion Website: https://www.bloomsbury.pub/OCR-editions-2024-2026

This is the OCR-endorsed edition covering the Latin AS and A-Level (Group 1) prescription of Tacitus Annals XII, 25-26, 41-43, 52-53, 56-59, 64-69, giving full Latin text, commentary and vocabulary, with a detailed introduction. It is AD 48 and the emperor Claudius marries his 4th wife Agrippina. Little does he know that over the next six years she will build her power and destroy her opponents, until she is ready for her greatest crime - the murder of Claudius himself to enable the accession of her son Nero. Tacitus creates a gripping account of the struggle for power under a weak princeps, involving family rivals, scheming freedmen and servile senators.Supporting resources are available on the Companion Website: https://www.bloomsbury.pub/OCR-editions-2024-2026

This is the OCR-endorsed edition covering the Latin AS and A-Level (Group 1) prescription of Cicero's pro Caelio, 51-58, 61-68, and the A-Level (Group 2) prescription of 33-50, giving full Latin text, commentary and vocabulary, with a detailed introduction that also covers the prescribed material to be read in English for A Level. Pro Caelio is one of Cicero's finest and funniest speeches. In 56 BC, he defended Marcus Caelius Rufus who was being prosecuted on charges of violence, including the attempted poisoning of Roman noblewoman Clodia with whom Caelius previously had an affair. Cicero's primary tactic was to blacken the character and reliability of Clodia, whom he depicts as the woman scorned, prosecuting Caelius out of revenge. Drawing on characters well known from Roman comedy, Cicero casts Caelius as the decent young man victimized by the aggressive courtesan, thereby shaming Clodia and glossing over the more awkward charges levelled at his client.Supporting resources are available on the Companion Website: https://www.bloomsbury.pub/OCR-editions-2024-2026
