"The greatest American dramatist of our age" Evening StandardThis fifth volume of Arthur Miller's work contains two plays from the early nineties: his highly acclaimed The Last Yankee (1993), which the Guardian called "a fine and moving play . . . Like all Miller's best work, it effortlessly links private and public worlds by connecting personal desperation to insane American values"; and The Ride Down Mount Morgan (1991), which explores themes of bigamy and betrayal, described as "searching, scorching, harsh but compassionate" (Sunday Times). Also contained in the volume is Almost Everybody Wins, the original version of the screenplay Arthur Miller wrote for Karel Reisz's film, "Everybody Wins".

"Listen to the dialogue: no other American dramatist has this feel for the ordinary talk of ordinary people, or the knowledge of what they do. This is more than a writer's craft, it is a psychological and moral openness to humanity, an act not of imitating, but of sharing". Sunday TimesThis fourth anthology features Arthur Miller's two early plays, The Golden Years, a historical tragedy about Montezuma's destruction at the hands of Cortez, and The Man Who Had All the Luck, a fable about human freedom and individual responsibility, are brought together in this volume. It also features two of his contemporary shorter plays, I Can't Remember Anything and Clara, first presented on a double bill as Danger! Memory. The latter focus on the importance and dangers of remembering the past, while the early plays, written at the time of the Second World War, mark the emergence of a drama in which public issues are rooted in private anxieties and chart the beginning of Miller's career that was one of the most distinguished in dramatic history.First produced in 1944 and revived in London in 2008, The Man Who Had All the Luck is a mesmerising drama in which the author's brilliance and characteristic qualities are already evident: The fourth volume of Miller's plays has been reissued with a new cover and features an introduction by the author and a chronology of his work.

Presenting the text of a notorious Jesuit attack on Queen Elizabeth I's treatment of her Catholic subjects, this volume highlights the European context of the English Reformation and Robert Persons's role as propagandist. In De persecutione Anglicana, Robert Persons (1546-1610) graphically describes the conditions in prisons, the harassment of Catholics at home and the gruesome manner of execution for treason. The work culminates in the arrest of the famous Jesuit martyr Edmund Campion, with rapidly revised versions bringing the narrative up to date after Campion's execution on 1 December 1581. Written in Latin to appeal to readers throughout Europe, it was translated into French, Italian and German, making it arguably the most important Latin martyrological work by an English Catholic of the Elizabethan period. This critical edition comprises the Latin text, English translation and commentary, and a textual history, appending additional material from the revised versions.Persons was actively involved in the drive to restore Roman Catholicism in England, as missionary strategist, controversialist and founder of English colleges abroad. He worked closely with the superior general of the Society of Jesus, Claudio Acquaviva, negotiating with Philip II of Spain, the Duke of Guise, the Duke of Parma and successive popes. Thanks to the growth of early modern British Catholic studies, his prolific and provocative English writings attract increasing scholarly attention, but his Latin texts have often been glossed over.

Drawing on more than 20 years of archaeological study and investigation at Zawiyet Umm el-Rakham by a team from the University of Liverpool (led by Professor Steven Snape), this book paints a nuanced picture of daily life not only at this liminal military site, but also in Ramesside Egypt more broadly. Constructed during the reign of Ramesses II, the fortified settlement was situated 300 kilometres west of Alexandria and represents the furthest western outpost of the Egyptian New Kingdom empire. Excavations in Area K of the fortress have uncovered extensive evidence for the living arrangements, minor industries, food production and daily life of the fort's inhabitants. This previously unpublished material forms the bedrock of this volume, which focuses on analysing the various subsistence and craft production strategies that were conducted alongside each other in this area, from baking, brewing and butchery to lithics working, bone-carving and weaving. These traces of the activities of the soldiers and their families shed new light on what life was like at this military installation and for ordinary Egyptians more widely, shifting away from a focus on elite social groups. The archaeological evidence covered in this book prompts a re-evaluation of the realities of the relationship between Egyptians and Libyans at the close of the Late Bronze Age. The purpose of the fortress' construction was primarily defensive, however the surviving material points to co-operation by means of collaborative farming and trading, and provides a direct counterpoint to the more belligerent contemporary royal monumental inscriptions describing Egypto-Libyan relations.

This book is the first selected collection of Emmeline Pankhurst's letters, and offers new insights into her political career, transnational social networks and family relationships.Emmeline Pankhurst, the leader of the Women's Social and Political Union (WSPU), was one of the most influential women of the 20th century. Charismatic, determined and a powerful orator, she was very much an activist who considered herself incompetent with a pen. Yet this selected collection of 150 letters compiled and carefully contextualised by leading gender historian June Purvis reveals a woman who could write well and vividly. The letters focus on Emmeline's suffragette years, but they also provide glimpses into the First World War and the Women's Party, of which she was co-founder and co-leader together with her daughter Christabel. Collectively, they offer new insights into her political career, transnational social networks and family relationships. For example, she corresponded with socialist figures such as Philip Snowden and Sam Robinson; with suffragettes such as Caroline Phillips and Elizabeth Robins; with well-known liberals such as C. P. Scott, editor of The Manchester Guardian; with admirers such as Alice Morgan Wright and Alva Belmont; with male symphathisers such as Henry Harben and Hugh Franklin; and with her own family members. This first collection of Emmeline Pankhurst's letters, some of them made available to the public for the first time, will be essential reading for academics and students interested in the history of the suffragette movement and modern British political history.

The Dissident Politics in Václav Havel¿s Van¿k Plays: Who Is Ferdinand Van¿k Anyway focuses on Ferdinand Van¿k, a semi-autobiographical character created by Václav Havel and featured in a series of nine plays written by Havel himself and three other dissident writers ¿ Pavel Kohout, Pavel Landovský, and Ji¿í Dienstbier. By exploring the `Van¿k experience,¿ Carol Strong details a multi-episodic, absurdist journey that provides an `insider¿s view¿ of the challenges facing those daring enough to question the status quo, a view that remains relevant today. Strong¿s contention is that the lines found in these plays served as a `secret language¿ of dissent in Cold War Czechoslovakia, which called the citizenry to contemplate the need for societal reform. As the plays were written at a time when the work of Havel and other dissidents were banned, the plays were never performed publicly, but through clandestine living room performances and the sharing of samizdat scripts the plays found an audience. Select phrases were indeed whispered throughout underground networks and helped forge a sense of oppositional solidarity among potential activists. Strong¿s argument is that the `Van¿k experience¿ metaphorically highlights how official power mechanisms are among the least insidious forms of societal power, as the state must follow predictable patterns of legal jurisprudence. By contrast, non-governmental forms of power ¿ as exercised by one¿s fellow citizens through informal social channels ¿ can challenge oppositional actors more because of the personal tone they adopt. Using this approach, Strong presents a timelessly relevant critique of modern society with its consumerist / conformist tendencies.
