This monograph investigates current issues in labour law enforcement from a socio-legal perspective. It analyses how local Italian enforcement actors promote the protection of workers in Prato - a city that in recent decades has seen a significant influx of Chinese migrants who run small workshops as part of the local clothing industry. Many of the Chinese firms in Prato fail to live up to core labour standards, such as maximum working hours, health and safety at work and payment of social security contributions. The book analyses the strategies and practices employed by three local enforcement actors (labour inspectors, labour unionists and a new type of labour law consultant) in their efforts to assist Chinese firms in improving their level of labour law compliance.Combining documentary, interview and observational data, the book applies theories of legal culture and legal development to address the interaction between law and society. It focuses on the operational aspects of law by asking three interrelated research questions: How do local enforcement actors promote the protection of workers in Chinese firms in Prato? Which tools are employed, and which rationalities drive the initiatives? The book thereby sheds light upon processes of legal cultural adaptation, informing ongoing international and national debates about what can actually be done to combat contemporary gaps in the protection of workers.

This book explores the relationship between the English law of unjust enrichment and legal obligations arising from other branches of the law. It examines the question, primarily, by considering how English courts resolve conflicts between restitution claims and countervailing legal entitlements. This is much needed given recent cases such as IEG v Zurich Insurance and Avonwick Holdings Ltd v Azitio Holdings Ltd clearly showing the differing positions taken by English courts on the question. By applying insights from the theory of unjust enrichment to Anglo-Australian case law, this study gives a welcome cogent explanation of a complex question.

This book proposes a new analytical angle to the politics of austerity in southern Europe after the euro crisis.The post-pandemic economic recession has plunged European leaders into fresh debates about how the European economy should be governed. Over a decade since the outset of the euro crisis, the role of austerity and its alternatives remains at the core of political dispute, with the memory of bailouts, conditionality, and the Troika in southern Europe still nourishing profound disagreements. Contrary to dominant narratives about austerity, domestic politics is central to the definition and legitimation of austerity across countries. Drawing comparisons between Greece, Portugal, and Spain during this period, the book traces the processes of crisis construal and of implementation of austerity, as well as the contentious politics that it generated. In doing so, it demonstrates how the political project of austerity in southern Europe was co-construed at the national, international, and transnational levels, with lessons for new ways to deal with economic recessions.

This book examines the dynamics around the introduction and spread of helmets and body armour throughout Egypt during the 18th, 19th and 20th Dynasties. It argues that the word 'introduction' is the best term to define this phenomenon because these types of military equipment were not in fact Egyptian technological innovations, but initially appeared at the end of the Bronze Age following the Kassite and Hurrian expansion in the Middle East before being dispersed throughout the surrounding territories. The analysis focuses particularly on a survey of iconographic, archaeological and lexicographic attestations from a wide range of surviving material evidence and literary sources. On the basis of the collated data, it provides as accurate a perspective as possible on how the helmet and the cuirass were introduced and propagated, their impact on warfare and their possible role in ideology across the chronological span of the New Kingdom. The volume also draws productive comparisons between the Egyptian data and contemporary attestations from the Middle East and the Aegean region in order to underpin the 'international' dynamics at play. In doing so it both encourages a broader ancient-historical perspective that sets New Kingdom Egypt within its contemporary context, and sheds new light on developments in the military history and warfare of the period.

This book presents a new way of looking at Wole Soyinka's engagement with the classical past. The Nigerian author and activist remains the only Black African author to win the Nobel Prize for Literature (1986), and his dramas, poems, memoirs and essays have become seminal examples of postcolonial literature. The frequent references to Greece and Rome that appear across Soyinka's writings, most explicitly in his 1973 play The Bacchae of Euripides: A Communion Rite, have often received short shrift in scholarship on the author. At best, these references have been understood as elements of Soyinka's prodigiously inclusive humanism. At worst, Soyinka's critics argue that the invocations of a Graeco-Roman past testify to the neocolonial cultural affinities that make Soyinka a problematic figure in postcolonial literary history. Adam Lecznar challenges these perspectives and argues that Soyinka's authorial outlook is propelled by a hybrid form of classicism. Soyinka aligns the legacy of Greece and Rome with the African cultural heritage to form a global structure of values that ensures his enduring significance in modern literary culture. By exploring how Soyinka appeals to Greece and Rome to reflect on Africa's ancient past, the contemporary belief system of the Yoruba people in the southwestern part of Nigeria, and the significance of tragic literature, Lecznar makes the bold claim that Soyinka's notion of classicism is not solely dependent on the memory of the Graeco-Roman past. Rather, it draws innovatively on a global cultural heritage to advance revolutionary and futural narratives of history, identity and culture.

Charitable organisations occupy a central place in society across much of the world, accounting for billions of pounds in revenue. As society changes, so does the law which regulates nonprofit organisations. From independent schools to foodbanks, they occupy a broad policy space. Not immune to scandals, sometimes nonprofits are in the news for all the wrong reasons and so, when they are in the public eye, regulators must respond to high profile cases. In this book, a team of internationally recognised charity law experts offers a modern take on a fast-changing policy field. Through the concept of policy debates it moves the field forward, providing an important reference point for developing scholarship in charity law and policy. Each chapter explores a policy debate, setting out the fault-lines in play, and often offering proposals for reform.Two important themes are explored in this edited collection. First, there is a policy tension in charity law between its largely conservative history and the need to keep up-to-date with social change.
