The Sense of the Universe deals with existential and phenomenological reflection upon modern cosmology with the aim to reveal hidden theological commitments in cosmology related to the mystery of human existence. The book proposes a new approach to the dialogue between science and theology based in a thorough philosophical analysis of acting forms of subjectivity involved in the study of the world and in religious experience. The book contributes to the synthesis of appropriation and incorporation of modern philosophical ideas in Christian theology, in particular its Eastern Orthodox form.

These chapters explore a number of issues in the contemporary study of Paul raised by questing what it means to read Paul from within Judaism rather than supposing that he left the practice and promotion of living Jewishly behind after his discovery of Jesus as Christ (Messiah).This is a different question to those which have driven the New Perspective over the last thirty years, which still operates from many traditional assumptions about Pauls motives and behavior, viewing them as inconsistent with and critical of Judaism.

Joseph examines the narrative techniques used in the Deuteronomistic History to portray Israels kings. While David is constructed as a model of adherence to the covenant, Jeroboam is constructed as the ideal opposite; other kings are characterized along one or the other of these two models. Joseph identifies differences between pre-exilic and exilic redactions in the Deuteronomistic History, offering a deepened understanding of the worldview and theology of this important biblical work.

Theological discussions often limit the focus of this passage to Gods sovereignty or to Pauls defense of Gods faithfulness, but less attention has been devoted to the form and style. Wallace demonstrates how Paul weaves two distinct Jewish literary forms togetherlament and midrashinto a logical narrative concerning Israels salvation. Attention is given to Pauls poetical structures, key literary terms, and use of Old Testament contexts.

Scholarship has painted many pictures of Augustine, but the picture of Augustine as preacher, says Sanlon, has been seriously neglected. When academics marginalize the Sermones ad Populum, the real Augustine is not presented accurately. In this study, Sanlon does more, however, than rehabilitate a neglected view of Augustine. Narrators of the Hebrew Bible generally allow their stories to proceed while relying on characters and dialogue to provide necessary information. This dissertation intervenes in Reformed readings of the doctrine of providence, particularly around Barths critical interpretation of the tradition stemming from Calvin and Schleiermacher. Kim argues that while Barth advances the discussion, his reading of Calvin is significantly hampered by his challenge to Schleiermacher. Kim provides an extensive reading Calvins writings, demonstrating that Calvin is more concerned with the Christological basis and Christian meaning of providence than Barths theology recognizes; as well, Schleiermachers theological construction problematizes aspects of Barths reading.

Recent Developments in Trinitarian Theology explores the major renaissance that Trinitarian theology has undergone in recent decades. The focus of this symposium is the role English-language theology plays in the renewal of Trinitarian theology. Its purpose is twofold: to gather international thinkers to present the major developments in Trinitarian theology and to show how Trinitarian theology can contribute to new thinking in contemporary systematic and critical fields, including political theology and the theology of religions.

This book argues that texts--even literary texts--, have an eschatology, too, a part in God's purpose for the cosmos. They, with all creation, move toward participation in the new creation, in the Trinity's expanding, creative love. This eschatological future for texts impacts how we understand meaning making, from the level of semiology to that of hermeneutics. This book tells the story of how readers participate in the future of the word, the eschatology of texts. If texts have a future in the kingdom of God, then readers' engagements with them--everything from preservation and utterance to translation, criticism, and call and response--can cultivate those futures in the love of the Trinity. Kriner explores how the fallenness and failures of texts, alongside readers' own failures, while seeming to challenge the future of the word, ultimately point to reading as a posture of reconciliation, in which reader and text meet in the Maranatha of all text.
