In my first few years as a developer I assumed that hard work was all I needed. Then I was passed over for a promotion and my manager couldn't give me feedback on what areas to improve, so I could get to the senior engineer level. I was frustrated; even bitter: not as much about missing the promotion, but because of the lack of guidance.By the time I became a manager, I was determined to support engineers reporting to me with the kind of feedback and support I wish I would have gotten years earlier. And I did. While my team tripled over the next two years, people became visibly better engineers, and this progression was clear from performance reviews and promotions. This book is a summary of the advice I've given to software engineers over the years - and then some more. This book follows the structure of a "typical" career path for a software engineer, from starting out as a fresh-faced software developer, through being a role model senior/lead, all the way to the staff/principle/distinguished level. It summarizes what I've learned as a developer and how I've approached coaching engineers at different stages of their careers. We cover "soft" skills which become increasingly important as your seniority increases, and the "hard" parts of the job, like software engineering concepts and approaches which help you grow professionally. The names of levels and their expectations can - and do! - vary across companies. The higher "tier" a business is, the more tends to be expected of engineers, compared to lower tier places. For example, the "senior engineer" level has notoriously high expectations at Google (L5 level) and Meta (E5 level,) compared to lower-tier companies. If you work at a higher-tier business, it may be useful to read the chapters about higher levels, and not only the level you're currently interested in.The book is composed of six standalone parts, each made up of several chapters:Part 1: Developer Career FundamentalsPart 2: The Competent Software DeveloperPart 3: The Well-Rounded Senior EngineerPart 4: The Pragmatic Tech LeadPart 5: Role Model Staff and Principal EngineersPart 6: ConclusionParts 1 and 6 apply to all engineering levels, from entry-level software developer, to principal-and-above engineer. Parts 2, 3, 4, and 5 cover increasingly senior engineering levels and group together topics in chapters, such as "Software Engineering," "Collaboration," "Getting Things Done," etc.Naming and levels vary, but the principles of what makes a great engineer who is impactful at the individual, team, and organizational levels, are remarkably constant. No matter where you are in your career, I hope this book provides a fresh perspective and new ideas on how to grow as an engineer.Praise for the book"From performance reviews to P95 latency, from team dynamics to testing, Gergely demystifies all aspects of a software career. This book is well named: it really does feel like the missing guidebook for the whole industry."- Tanya Reilly, senior principal engineer and author of The Staff Engineer's Path"Spanning a huge range of topics from technical to social in a concise manner, this belongs on the desk of any software engineer looking to grow their impact and their career. You'll reach for it again and again for sage advice in any situation."- James Stanier, Director of Engineering at Shopify, author of TheEngineeringManager.com

  • - A Trial Lawyer Looks at All of the Evidence
    av Atty Joe Otto
    188,-

The death and resurrection of Jesus Christ are the central facts undergirding Christian faith and life. Joe Otto brings to bear his legal training in a succinct and masterful summary of the Biblical and historical evidence for the reality of these events and compellingly urges their significance for us today. This little book will both greatly encourage Christian disciples and challenge those who do not believe, are skeptics, or simply have questions, to take the step for faith. I especially liked the compendium of references to the incredibly intricate way God's design is displayed in the small details of the natural world.

How a group of committed volunteers led by a retired aerospace engineer built a homeless shelter in a gold rush community and how the power and financial elite closed it down. Was it because Hangtown Haven was an unexpected success? How does one build a successful homeless shelter that is legal, practical and economical at no cost to the taxpayer? A group of homeless volunteers led by a retired aerospace engineer along with non-profit corporations and concerned churches jumped into the fray and did just that. Not, however, without making mistakes and ruffling feathers along the way. No one could have predicted how controversial it would be to provide shelter to our neighbors who had no place to live. "We are going to build a modern dog shelter with $7 million, but don't bother asking the county or the city for one penny to help our homeless citizens."So, the real question is, "How do you build a homeless shelter that works and is acceptable to the entire community with donations only?" This book tells the story of one Sierra community's eff ort to answer this question and how its success proved that it could be done, however its success also turned the city's power establishment against it.When it was obvious that the shelter was a success and homeless people were thriving, the city's power structure got together and closed it down throwing forty homeless men and women out of their shelter in the middle of winter with no place to live. But the genie is out of the bottle now and the occupants of this small gold mining town know how to do it the next time. They are prepared to try again until they are successful even though all of the business, political and power interests are determined to stop it. Th is story tells how it was done, how it can be done and how to avoid serious mistakes along the way.

  • - Cómo Estuvimos a Punto de Perder la Segunda Guerra Mundial
    av Arthur Edwards
    161,-

  • - A History of Bankhead's/Scott's Tennessee Battery in the American Civil War
    av Bruce R Kindig
    291,-

This battle flag was given to the battery just before the Battle of Shiloh. I wrote this book with the purpose of having the historical narrative separate from stories of the men. If the reader wants to know about an individual, there are sections within the chapters about the officers and enlisted men. It is the intention of this book to describe the battery's place in the large scheme of things. On the maps in this book are marks that show the location of the battery at each battle. In each chapter, after the narrative, there are descriptions of the officers and what they were doing, followed by information about the enlisted men. At the end of the book, there are several appendices that present lists of men for various times. The names are listed chronologically first and then alphabetically.

  • - Science Fiction, Non Fiction, Romance, Humor and Fantasy
    av Craig Glatky
    188,-

This story It Finally Happened was an occurring dream. I would have this dream four times a night, so I decided to write it down. I would try to write a story on this dream and change the begging of it. But it was not a begging. So, I would stop, and years go by, and I would try again. This time I said a stupid thing on Facebook. The girl who I had a crush on during first grade saw it and I broke our friendship. Getting this information from a family member so I was a little skeptic. It was after my high school reunion I thought every girl who I did not know was her. Until I went on Facebook and saw her.My first book was very short, and it had about a million errors. But not really, I did not say this in my book which I should have. You might see it here. I was trying to write my character in a deep sleep like he was talking in the sleep. I did not work out as I was thinking. My Character is in a comma. Yes, I felt very sad. It took me years to get her last name right. This book has science fiction, romance, humor, action, even a small musical. In addition, being a first-time writer. Few of my characters they can't speak right so I type the name of what they were speaking so it would be funny. My book also has humor in it. My humor to others is not very funny.I have changed all my character's name in my book. I might have kept my Great Grand father's name and my great uncle's name. This book is also dedicated to them. I also mention my Great Aunt she had work for Hostess and My Grand Mother. My dad had some good jokes, I also mention my great uncle on my mother's first husband side, my two oldest sisters' side as he considered my third oldest and me and my younger sister family. He made great coleslaw.

For many years I harbored anger and resentment toward some who have really hurt me. This anger caused issues in my life with health, depression, and relationships, to name a few. That is not the story. This story is me taking painful steps to a new beginning. There have been trials that have stopped our Success in its tracks; Relationships that have been severed; Fears that have caused us to run scared or freeze with paralysis. We have all been hurt, let down or disappointed at some point in our lives. I choose not to hate as God gives me strength. I no longer feel the need to be vindictive toward those who have hurt me. Vengeance does not belong to me, it belongs to the Lord. I thank the Lord Jesus for his Grace and Mercy that are new every morning.Forgiven sinner, saved by grace. Mother of two delightful instructors who teach me and keep me on my knees. Follower of The Savior Jesus Christ.

  • av Orland French
    216,-

Th is story represents the exchange of wartime letters across a century of time and across the Atlantic Ocean between France and Canada. More than a hundred years ago a German shell dropped on Pte. Oscar French on Vimy Ridge in 1917 and ended his adventures in the First World War. A century later his nephew, historian and author Orland French, replies to Oscar's real letters home to his mother and tells him, in his own sardonic style, how the world turned out after the horrific War to End All Wars. Letters to Vimy is an excellent and highly entertaining personal guide to the birth and growth of Canadian nationalism out of that victory at Vimy. Sources abounded for this project, including a memorable conversation with a group of elderly German tourists on the steps of the Vimy Monument.
