Tishomingo County, formed in 1836, was named for the leading chief of the Chickasaw tribe. Located in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains, it is steeped in historical culture and scenic vistas. The legendary Natchez Trace Parkway, the premier highway of the early 1800s and now a modern scenic parkway, runs through the county. The famous mineral springs nestled among giant old trees in Iuka are allegedly the only place on earth where seven totally different springs flow from the same spot. These waters became renowned for their "curative" powers, and due to the arrival of the railroad the area quickly became a mecca for the rich and famous. Unfortunately, the Civil War's bloody Battle of Iuka was fought in 1862, and the burgeoning area was devastated.

Aberdeen was settled by Scottish immigrants who moved up the Cape Fear River from the North Carolina coast. Before the railroad, the region consisted of small farms and a single church. The arrival of the Raleigh & Augusta Railroad in the mid-1870s was the first major impetus for growth in and around Aberdeen. Soon thereafter, the lumber industry expanded and naval stores were established. This advancement contributed to the growth and success of Aberdeen as a major rail and commercial center. In the 20th century, this growing community underwent development and became a popular shopping destination featuring a vibrant and historic downtown commercial district. Aberdeen Lake provides recreational and social activities and is an integral part of the public parks system. Aberdeen shares the remarkable history of a community that has grown and prospered in the North Carolina Sandhills.

Founded in 1697 as Maidenhead, the Township of Lawrence was renamed in 1816 in honor of naval hero Capt. James Lawrence, who commanded the frigate Chesapeake during the War of 1812. Situated in the heart of Mercer County, the township has served as a stopping point along several transportation routes, including road, rail, and canal, linking New York and Philadelphia. During the 1800s, the town saw the construction of the Delaware and Raritan Canal and two railways, including the Camden & Amboy Railroad, within its borders. Once an agricultural town, Lawrence grew during the 20th century from a village of about 1,000 residents to a thriving suburb of the state capital with a population of almost 30,000. Along the way, the township became the home of multinational corporations, the Lawrenceville School, and Rider University. The images featured in this book tell the story of how a growing population created a thriving community through educational institutions, religion, social endeavors, and public service.

In the early 1800s, the western part of Orange County was more than a day's journey from the county seat of Hillsborough. Area residents petitioned for a new county, which prompted the North Carolina General Assembly to create Alamance County. Centrally located, Graham was established as its county seat. Men arrived by stagecoach, horseback, and wagon to live and work in this emerging town. Entrepreneurs provided the vision and tradesmen supplied the labor as mercantile businesses, hotels, and homes dotted the town's growing skyline. Graham became a trading center for residents of Alamance County as well as the neighboring counties of Orange, Chatham, Caswell, and Randolph. Before long, all roads led to Graham. Today, activities in the community still revolve around the court square and downtown businesses. Graham showcases the vibrant history and evolution of this unique North Carolina Piedmont town.

Perry Hall Mansion, constructed c. 1775 as the country estate of Harry Dorsey and Prudence Carnan Gough, has long been considered one of the most historic structures in Baltimore County, Maryland. Nestled on a ridge overlooking the lush forest of the Gunpowder River Valley, the mansion has played host to a number of crucial events in both local history and the emergence of Methodism in the United States. Since its completion, the house has claimed 14 different principal owners, culminating with its transfer to public ownership in 2001. Each of the families who lived there left behind unique legacies. Materials contained in Perry Hall Mansion depict the evolving use of the building and grounds and demonstrate how this progression reflected changing conditions within Maryland generally.

Colebrook, with its many shops and arts center, remains the commercial heart for Stewartstown and Columbia.
