Water bugs are familiar insects in aquatic habitats throughout the World. They belong to the order Hemiptera, the largest insect order with incomplete metamorphosis. There are basically two kinds: (1) the semiaquatic bugs (Gerromorpha) which live upon the water surface and (2) the true water bugs (Nepomorpha) which live beneath the water surface. Water bugs are found in a wide variety of natural habitats from small, temporary pools to larger ponds and lakes, from small streams to rivers, and from inland freshwater bodies to coastal mangroves, tidal pools of coral reefs, and the surface of the ocean. Water bugs are chiefly predators or scavengers, feeding on any prey they can master, from tiny crustaceans and insects to tadpoles and small fish. They play a major role in aquatic ecosystems and may serve as indicators of the biological quality of aquatic habitats. They are chiefly beneficial to man since many species prey on mosquitoes and are themself preyed upon by fish. Because of thei

This is a strongly revised new edition of the authors' An illustrated Key to European Sesiidae published in 1995 published in a very limited edition and out of print within three months. The present book contains comprehensive information on all European species of this Lepidoptera family of day flying moths. All the many taxonomical, biological and distributional changes of the last years are included. Introductory chapters comprise a short historical outline, brief information on the morphology, biology, phylogeny and distribution as well as collecting and rearing methods, and lists of European Sesiidae and their hostplants. Keys to all European genera and species are provided. The main part of the book presents a systematic survey of all European species. Diagnostic morphological characters, bionomics and distribution in each species are shortly described. For each species line drawings of male and female genitalia are given, for some species also other diagnostic characters. The di

Each volume in this series illustrates the adults of all species of Geometrid Moths in photographical color plates of the best quality. Sexual dimorphism as well as polymorphism is also illustrated, and all subspecies are illustrated when possible. Most species are shown in natural size, but larger groups of small species such as the genera Idaea and Eupithecia are shown enlarged. The following information is provided for each species: full name; original reference to all available nominal names (valid names and synonyms); diagnosis based on external features, including detail figures where necessary; male and female genitalia of all species with line drawings or photographs; and a summary of the European distribution and also of distribution outside the area treated; a map of the European distribution; phenology with detailed information about flight period or periods, with reference to various parts of the distribution area; information about how the species hibernates; biology inclu
