Provides a concise state-of-the-art overview of the theory and applications of polynomials that are sums of squares. This is an exciting and timely topic, with rich connections to many areas of mathematics, including polynomial and semidefinite optimization, real and convex algebraic geometry, and theoretical computer science.
The polynomials studied in this book take their origin in number theory. The authors show how, by drawing simple pictures, one can prove some long-standing conjectures and formulate new ones. The theory presented here touches upon many different fields of mathematics.
Introduces a new research direction in set theory: the study of models of set theory with respect to their extensional overlap or disagreement. The book considers a broad spectrum of objects from analysis, algebra, and combinatorics. The topic is nearly inexhaustible in its variety, and many directions invite further investigation.
Paul Erdos was an amazing and prolific mathematician whose life as a world-wandering numerical nomad was legendary. He published almost 1500 scholarly papers before his death in 1996, and he probably thought more about math problems than anyone in history. Like a traveling salesman offering his thoughts as wares, Erdos would show up on the doorstep of one mathematician or another and announce, "My brain is open." After working through a problem, he'd move on to the next place, the next solution. Hoffman's book, like Sylvia Nasar's biography of John Nash, A Beautiful Mind, reveals a genius's life that transcended the merely quirky. But Erdos's brand of madness was joyful, unlike Nash's despairing schizophrenia. Erdos never tried to dilute his obsessive passion for numbers with ordinary emotional interactions, thus avoiding hurting the people around him, as Nash did. Oliver Sacks writes of Erdos: "A mathematical genius of the first order, Paul Erdos was totally obsessed with his subject--he thought and wrote mathematics for nineteen hours a day until the day he died. He traveled constantly, living out of a plastic bag, and had no interest in food, sex, companionship, art--all that is usually indispensable to a human life."The Man Who Loved Only Numbers is easy to love, despite his strangeness. It's hard not to have affection for someone who referred to children as "epsilons," from the Greek letter used to represent small quantities in mathematics; a man whose epitaph for himself read, "Finally I am becoming stupider no more"; and whose only really necessary tool to do his work was a quiet and open mind. Hoffman, who followed and spoke with Erdos over the last 10 years of his life, introduces us to an undeniably odd, yet pure and joyful, man who loved numbers more than he loved God--whom he referred to as SF, for Supreme Fascist. He was often misunderstood, and he certainly annoyed people sometimes, but Paul Erdos is no doubt missed. --Therese Littleton
The author studies continuous processes indexed by a special family of graphs. Processes indexed by vertices of graphs are known as probabilistic graphical models. In 2011, Burdzy and Pal proposed a continuous version of graphical models indexed by graphs with an embedded time structure - so-called time-like graphs.
Offers an introduction to the perturbative path integral for gauge theories (in particular, topological field theories) in Batalin-Vilkovisky formalism and to some of its applications. The book is oriented toward a graduate mathematical audience and does not require any prior physics background.
Presents a collection of resources for mathematics faculty interested in incorporating questions of social justice into their classrooms. The heart of the book is a collection of fourteen classroom-tested modules featuring ready-to-use activities and investigations for the college mathematics classroom.
A children's activity book highlighting the lives and work of 29 African American women mathematicians, including Dr Christine Darden, Mary Jackson, Katherine Johnson, and Dorothy Vaughan from the award-winning book and movie Hidden Figures. This is a must-read for parents and children alike.
Addresses various aspects of the theory of automorphic forms and its relations with the theory of $L$-functions, the theory of elliptic curves, and representation theory. This volume is intended for researchers interested in expanding their own areas of focus, thus allowing them to "build bridges" to mathematical questions in other fields.
Demonstrates that complex numbers and geometry can be blended together beautifully. This results in easy proofs and natural generalizations of many theorems in plane geometry, such as the Napoleon theorem, the Ptolemy-Euler theorem, the Simson theorem, and the Morley theorem.
Offers an introduction to algebraic number theory for readers with a moderate knowledge of elementary number theory and some familiarity with the terminology of abstract algebra. With its exceptionally clear prose, hundreds of exercises, and historical motivation, this is a textbook for a second undergraduate course in number theory.
Brings together three approaches to constructing the "virtual" fundamental cycle for the moduli space of pseudo-holomorphic curves. All approaches are based on the idea of local Kuranishi charts for the moduli space. The book offers a comprehensive understanding of the details of these constructions and the assumptions under which they can be made.
Zeta and $L$-functions play a central role in number theory. They provide important information of arithmetic nature. This book, which grew out of the author's teaching over several years, explores the interaction between number theory and combinatorics using zeta and $L$-functions as a central theme.
Mathematical models - equations of various sorts capturing relationships between variables involved in a complex situation - are fundamental for understanding the potential consequences of choices we make. This book on elementary topics in mathematical modeling and data analysis has a specific focus on environmental applications.
A textbook on modeling that happens to focus on financial instruments for the management of economic risk. The book combines a study of mathematical modeling with exposure to the tools of probability theory, difference and differential equations, numerical simulation, data analysis, and mathematical analysis.
Explores various topics of universal algebra, universal algebraic geometry, logic geometry, and algebraic logic, as well as applications of universal algebra to computer science, geometric ring theory, small cancellation theory, and Boolean algebras.
Addresses the latest trends and perspectives in the area of nonlinear dispersive equations and fluid flows. The topics mainly focus on using state-of-the-art methods and techniques to investigate problems of depth and richness arising in quantum mechanics, general relativity, and fluid dynamics.
Organised around carefully sequenced problems, Linear Algebra and Geometry will help students build both the tools and the habits that provide a solid basis for further study in mathematics. This volume uses elementary geometry to build the beautiful edifice of results and methods that make linear algebra such an important field.
Many laws of physics are formulated in terms of differential equations. This book puts together the three main aspects of the topic of partial differential equations, namely theory, phenomenology, and applications, from a contemporary point of view.
Pick up this book and dive into one of eight chapters relating mathematics to fiber arts! Amazing exposition transports any interested person on a mathematical exploration that is rigorous enough to capture the hearts of mathematicians.
Data science is a highly interdisciplinary field, incorporating ideas from applied mathematics, statistics, probability, and computer science, as well as many other areas. This book provides an introduction to the mathematical methods that form the foundations of machine learning and data science.
Offers a comprehensive history of the development of mathematics in the US and Canada. This first volume of a two-volume work takes the reader from the European encounters with North America in the fifteenth century up to the emergence of the United States as a world leader in mathematics in the 1930s.
