So who's Yoelin Thibbony? That's what she calls herself now. She endured a cruel and abusive childhood, when there was no one to rescue her. Now she performs Rescues of children, people or things-sometimes for hire, sometimes for free. In defeating a long-game conspiracy to take over Corporatia, Yoelin was compelled to leave a loose end. Now she finds that the conspiracy is not only still active, but is vaster than she had imagined-and the conspirators want their revenge! A strange communication from an unidentified source that requests a Rescue leads Yoelin into a trap, where she encounters a nemesis from her past as a Special Security Operative. Circumstances compel her to take him aboard the Sequana, but as an ally or an enemy, she remains uncertain. His subsequent erratic behavior fails to clarify his role, and she must remain on guard. Meanwhile, Abnoba, the Sequana's computer, becomes an entity unparalleled in the history of computers. Maybe Abby can save the day...at a terrible cost. But that cost pales in significance beside the betrayal Yoelin has to confront in her family. If she can survive that...but does she want to?

By day Oliva Sudden is a substitute high school teacher struggling with unruly students and administrations that do not care for her methods or her race. At night she haunts the neighborhood, fighting those whose activities harm the 'hood's innocents-people who just want to live and grow. To do this, she has been gifted with special skills that make her invulnerable. Jordan Farrell, a white detective, has been selected to stay in an apartment in the 'hood to represent "police presence." None too happy about this, he nevertheless finds himself involved with the people who live there, and tries to help when he can, often going beyond the call of duty. His partner, Detective Jamaryelle Moore, supports him. Their caseload includes investigations of recent unsolved killings in the 'hood. Unknown to them, the killings are being carried out by Oliva Sudden-who lives next door to Farrell.

As Yoelin strives to rescue herself, she stumbles upon a dark family secret: she may not be who she thought she was. But can she ever discover who she really is?

She's been hired to retrieve stolen archives. But to perform this Rescue, Yoelin has to return to Havelox Rest, the world of her childhood-a world that still holds dark and bleak terrors for her.
