Wenn ich die vorliegenden Erzählungen als Moderne Novellen bezeichnet habe, so bedeutet das keineswegs, daß ich mich selbst mit Betonung unter die Modernsten der modernen Poeten stellen möchte. Es soll vielmehr nur angedeutet sein, daß im Gegensatz zu meinen früheren drei Sammlungen der Novellen und Legenden aus verklunge nen Zeiten, die Stoffe hier nicht mehr der Antike, sondern der Neuzeit entnommen sind. Es ist Gegenwartsdichtung, was ich gebe. Wer mit mir durch jene verklungenen Zeiten gewandert ist, wird, was ich meine, verstehen und den Ge gensatz, wie ich hoffe, erträglich finden.
