In einem dicken philosophischen Buche, gedruckt in unsern Tagen, haben Sie gelesen, daß die Phrynen, und die Aspasien ganz leicht die Sokraten, und Platone aufwogen; und mit Rechte hat Ihnen dieser artige Ausspruch Muth eingeflößt. Wahrscheinlich war Aspasia nicht so schön, als Sie, und Phryne hatte nicht die Geschicklichkeit, die Grazie. Sie kehren die Köpfe zu Paris, wie jene zu Athen oder Theben, um; und also haben Sie Recht, sich für eine Erbinn dieser berühmten Schönen zu halten. Und sie verlangen den Besitz ihres Ruhmes, wie ihrer Talente; ihres Rufes, wie ihrer glücklichen Unternehmung für sich. Die Eine derselben gab, wie man weis, den Philosophen ihres Zeitalters Unterricht in der Beredtsamkeit. Sie lehrte sie die Kunst, mit Sanftheit den Geist der Menschen zu regieren. Der berühmte Lehrmeister des Alcibiades studirte unter ihr, und er schämte sich nicht zu gestehn, wie viel Dank er ihr wisse. Sie wars, von welcher Sokrates die erhabenen Lehren empfieng, die er in der Folge mit so vieler Sorgfalt seinem jungen Schüler einprägte. Die Andere verlangte von ihren Liebhabern, daß sie, wenn sie zu ihr kämen, ihr einen harten Stein behändigten. Der war das Zeichen, auf welches ihre Thüre sich öffnete. Auch verwahrte sie, sagt man, sehr sorgfältig die Modelle davon. Aus dieser wunderbaren Sammlung ließ sie, zum Zeitvertreibe in ihrem Alter, eine sehr hohe Pyramide bauen, und die Reisenden haben dieses Denkmaal mit Rechte unter die sieben Weltwunder gezählet.
