The theology of sacred or clerical orders of the Latin Church in the high and later Middle Ages developed from an amalgam of texts written from late patristic antiquity through to the 12th century. Such texts, studied and edited in this volume, include letters, tracts, sermons and canon law pieces.

Both the areas of western Europe - Iberian peninsula and southern Italy - had their own indigenous liturgies and music (Old Spanish and Beneventan), and distinctive written scripts (Visigothic and Beneventan). This title covers the materials illustrating that these areas are indeed closely related, both in their differences and their similarities.

The two themes brought together in this volume have close links. The book attempts to show the need for liturgiologists to be aware of the riches in mediaeval legal sources, and for legal historians to take account of the wealth of liturgical material that is a principal part of Church law.
