Das Museum Tinguely zeigt mit "Roger Ballen. Call of the Void" eine Ausstellung, die als achte Folge der Serie Danse macabre im Vorraum Bezug nimmt auf Jean Tinguelys Spätwerk "Mengele Totentanz" (Kehrer 2017). Dabei ist der Ansatzpunkt hier wieder ein anderer - während es bei "Anouk Kruithof. Universal Tongue" der Tanz oder bei "Bruce Conner. Light out of Darkness" die Apokalypse war, die den Anstoß zur Gegenüberstellung gab, ist es im Falle von Roger Ballen die verstörende, irritierende Stimmung seiner Fotografien und Installationen. Ballen hinterfragt in seinem Werk die menschliche Psyche und stellt sich selbst wie auch dem Betrachtenden Fragen nach dem Sein und dem Werden.Ballen schreibt dazu: «Meine Ausstellung, der ich bewusst den Titel "Call of the Void" (Ruf der Leere) gegeben habe, ist ein Versuch, sich mit den meiner Meinung nach zentralen Fragen der menschlichen Existenz auseinanderzusetzen: Woher kommen wir? Weshalb sind wir hier? Und wohin gehen wir, wenn wir sterben? Ich habe zwar keineswegs den Anspruch, mit Antworten oder auch nur Fragen auf diese tiefgreifenden und schwierigen Themen dienen zu können. Ich hoffe aber, dass meine Ausstellung die Wahrnehmung des Betrachters herausfordern und somit einen Prozess der Selbsterkundung in Gang setzen wird, der mit einer Hinterfragung des Selbstverständnisses verbunden ist».Die Ausstellung besteht aus zwei Teilen, die sich aber gegenseitig bedingen und befruchten. Einerseits hängen an den Wänden Fotografien aus den letzten analog aufgenommenen Serien Ballens Asylum of the Birds und Roger's Rats, und andererseits wird das Zentrum des Raumes von einer Hütte beherrscht, eine ärmliche Behausung von Menschen am Rande der Gesellschaft, wie sie oft in Roger Ballens Werk vorkommen.

The Earth Will Come to Laugh and Feast is a poetic journey through a carefully curated selection of internationally revered artist, Roger Ballen's photographs. Italian poet, Gabriele Tinti, reflects on Ballen's images with original texts written in the form of elegies, prayers, and laments. The book evokes the strong bond between art and literature, and of ekphrastic writing that evokes images by highlighting hidden relationships and implied mysteries. The result is a moving collection of poems and short stories revealing the profound state of existence and the fate of our torment, the inevitability of suffering, and of our helplessness from pain. As Tinti says "this partnership moves from the rubble, passes through cemeteries, sniffs out the signs of what has gone. Roger Ballen's photos, my words, are a kind of defense against the terrible power of death. They are an accumulation of enthusiasm, injuries, obsessions. They are effigies composed to disturb the reader, to ambush the thought, the things".

The World According to Roger Ballen, co-authored with Colin Rhodes, looks at Ballen's career in the wider cultural context beyond photography, including his connections with and collections of Art Brut. It features photographs selected from across Ballen's career, along with installations created exclusively for the exhibition at Halle Saint Pierre and photographs of objects and works from Ballen's own collection of Art Brut. Organized thematically, with texts by Colin Rhodes and an introduction and interview with Ballen by Martine Lusardy (the Director of the Halle Saint Pierre), The World According to Roger Ballen is both a catalogue of the first, major exhibition of Ballen's work in France and an exploration of Ballen's positioning within and connections to the wider context of modern and contemporary art.

A study of the connections between photography, drawing, the mind and the body. In this book, the images were inspired by the simple act of drawing on windows - a practice that the author observed first-hand in many communities. It features photographs that carves out a realm that is both earthly and otherworldly, physical and spiritual.
