" The operation of the alchemical elements in forty-seven revealing steps. The bodies of all natural things being as well perfect as imperfect from the original of time, and compounded of a quaternity of elements or natures, viz., fire, air, earth, water, are conjoined by God Almighty in a perfect unity. In these four elements is hid the secret of the philosophers. The earth and water give corporeity and visibility; the fire and air, the spirit and invisible power, which cannot be seen or touched but in the other two. When these four elements are conjoined, and made to exist in one, they become another thing; whence it is evident, that all things in nature are composed of the said elements, being altered and changed."

This entire book has been retyped, redesigned, and reformatted. Since these books are not made from scanned copies, the text is readable and clear.

The Mirror of Alchimy is a short alchemical manual, known in Latin as Speculum Alchemiae. Translated in 1597, it was only the second alchemical text printed in the English language. Long ascribed to Roger Bacon (1214-1294), the work is more likely the product of an anonymous author who wrote between the thirteenth and the fifteenth centuries.

" A Prejudate eye much lessens the noblenesse of the Subject. Bacons name may bring at the first an inconvenience to the Book, but Bacons ingenuity will recompence it ere he be solidly read. ¿is as an Apology is the usher to his other Workes, which may happily breath a more free Air hereäer, when once the World sees how clear he was, from loving Negromacy. 'Twas the Popes smoak which made the eyes of that Age so sore, as they could not discern any open hearted and clear headed soul from an heretical Phantasme. ¿e silly Fryers envying his too prying head, by their crä had almost got it off his shoulders. It's dangerous to be wiser than the multitude, for that unruly Beast will have every over- topping head to be lopped shorter, lest it plot, ruine, or stop the light, or shadow its extravagancies. How famous this Frier is in the judgment of both godly and wise men, I referre you to the Probatums of such men, whose single Authorities were of sufficiency to equallize a Jury of others; and as for the Book, I refer it to thy reading. As for myself, I refer me to him, whom I serve, and hope thou wilt adore...."

Quant à la traduction, elle est aussi exacte que possible; les passages obscurs sont rendus mot à mot. La matière première de la pierre philosophale est le Mercure des philosophes et l'alchimie est la mère de la chimie et des sciences modernes.

The Opus Majus of Roger Bacon (c.1214-92) is one of the most influential scientific and philosophical texts of its age and arguably the high point of medieval knowledge of the physical sciences. In the work Bacon makes a plea for the reform of education, emphasizing the rightful role of the sciences in the university curriculum and the interdependence of the various disciplines.Prepared in 1267 at the request of Pope Clement IV, the treatise is a collection of ideas, an encyclopedia of knowledge embracing all science, including language, logic, optics, mathematics, moral philosophy, and physics.
