We oftentimes need a counselor, in which there's no shame in seeking one out. We also need God's Word to guide us. This journey of discovery is where the Holy Spirit is truly our comfort and guide. They say history repeats itself as there are philosophies that serve as the undercurrent for particular beliefs and behaviors rooted not only in a culture but are also quietly passed onto another culture. At some point the under-riding philosophy will again surface, resulting in history repeating itself. Is it possible that history has repeated itself and like the Pharisees did, the institutional church of today has made the path to God so steep that we can't even climb it? Jesus is looking for elemental, childlike faith, not the keeping of religious rules. Jesus came to walk among the poor, the prostitutes and the lost, bringing them dignity, healing, and forgiveness. If you're not ready to serve others like Jesus did, you're not ready to serve Christ. Are you living out of Jesus' philosophy or the Pharisee philosophy? It's time to let go of the religion of the Pharisees and embrace the grace of God.

A healthy leader has a horizontal style with a vertical goal. In other words, be team-minded and link arms with those on your team. Their job is not to help you climb a ladder of success, but together you reach the goals that you and your team have made. The purpose of leadership is to lead in a healthy, horizontal way by being a team player, making the most of your influence and your team. Too many leaders lead in a vertical way, climbing the ladder of success, not instilling the tools and principles of healthy leadership, even using their influence to manipulate those on their team. It takes influence, not power, to be an ExO leader. Leading a team horizontally simply requires humility, servanthood and respect for one another. Without those components, the leader will remain status quo. You will hear from men such as Colin Powell and from a simple janitor. You will dig into companies such as Home Depot and General Electric, finding what a horizontal, healthy, extraordinary leaders look like.

Live with less clutter in your life. Learn how to live a simple and fulfilled life, even in the midst of difficult circumstances. We allow so many things to crowd out simplicity, such as trying to live perfectly, giving in to the demands the life puts on us. Sometimes we just focus on the things that demand all our attention and lose sight of what's really important. And other times, we ignore the things in our souls that need healing, causing corruption to erode the simplicity of living in freedom. We choose to see what we want to see and in time, we tend to be overwhelmed with life. This doesn't have to be the case. In Simplicity of the Heart, you'll laugh; you'll cry.
