Barlow, a tale wherein native ingenuity trumps book learning. A friendly bet between the mayor of Farcey Springs and the county sheriff puts this countrified veteran face-to-face with certain restrictions that hinder the use of "blood-letting" weapons in defense of his homestead. Southern dialect of course adds 1930s realism to the flesh of this novella, including unique perspectives and phraseology that run through most of the remaining thirteen short stories in this collection. All stripes and colors of folks interact in amusing ways. One story focuses on matters critical to three moonshiners of the Great Depression era. Another, to a hospitalized elderly woman who reminisces about her beloved as she surrenders full rein to a lively subconscious. Other stories range over a broad array of characters, settings, plots and themes and told in a rich style peppered with humor and feeling, reflecting some of the South's lighter yet touching moments.
Professor of natural and experimental philosophy at the University of Cambridge, Robert Willis (1800-75) mostly lectured on mechanism, and was elected an honorary member of the Institution of Civil Engineers in 1838. But Willis's interests also included Italian Gothic architecture, and his observations on the style, amassed in 1832-3 while travelling in France, Italy and Germany, were presented in this book, first published in 1835. The work is a pioneering study of Italian Gothic, a mode overlooked by his contemporaries, and key examples are brought together. It places Italian Gothic architecture within a European context and argues that the style represents an evolutionary assemblage of architectural motifs from different places and earlier periods. Willis's narrative refocused attention on Italian Gothic, winning the approval of the Institution of British Architects, which made him an honorary member in the year of its publication.
Robert Willis (1800-1875) was a scientist, inventor and architectural historian of international repute. As Jacksonian Professor of Natural and Experimental Philosophy at Cambridge, he demonstrated specially made mechanical devices to huge audiences. First published in 1841, Principles of Mechanism provided the theory behind the demonstrations. He defined mechanism as the means by which any relations of motion could be realised. The book was extremely influential, with all books in English, French, and German on the subject for the next generation adopting Willis' classification and nomenclature. He worked closely with William Whewell, whose Mechanics of Engineering was published in the same year. These two books established the science of mechanism, and provided study materials for the rapidly growing engineering profession. The work became a standard textbook for engineering and mathematics students, with a second edition issued in 1870.
