IT might perhaps be expected that I should avail myself of this opportunity to supply some information respecting the progress and prospects of Christian Missions in India, or to discuss some questions that have arisen respecting their organization and management ; and this would probably have been my own opinion of what was desirable, had it not been for the importance which certain more general questions-affecting the relation of Christianity itself to the religions of the world, and especially its relation to the Oriental systems of religion-have lately assumed. The view of this subject which seems to be prevailing more and more amongst the literary and scientific classes, and to which utterance appeared to me to be given a few weeks ago, at the International Congress of Orientalists, by one of the most distinguished scholars and men of letters of our time 1 that view would lead, I believe, either to the abandonment of missions altogether, or to their being left exclusively in the hands of persons who have "a zeal for God, but not according to knowledge."
The Inner Citadel of Religion by Robert Caldwell first published in 1879.WHEN we scrutinize the world in which we live, we cannot but be struck with the perfect adaptation of each thing that exists to everything else that exists. The creation of the elements of all things out of nothing, the beginning of evolution, the birth of force, or by whatever term the first origination of the existing order of nature may be described, may be apprehended by faith or inferred by reason; but everything that our senses and consciousness take cognizance of in the order of nature under which we live-everything that comes within the range of our own actual knowledge - is found to resolve itself into an adaptation of condition to condition, of law to law. We find the universe, as far as our acquaintance with it extends, to be a storehouse, not merely of forces and forms of matter, but also of correlations and co adjustments. And the existence of this system of adaptations testifies to us of the existence Of First Cause. Each of those ad of Great adaptations taken separately, and still more the Sum of them, as far as we know them, taken together, testifies directly to the intelligence and power, and indirectly to the "Godhead" of their Author.
The Three Way-marks by Robert Caldwell first published in 1860.THIS little book was originally written in Tamil, under the name of ¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿ , and has now been translated into English in the supposition that it may be read with advantage by natives who have learned English. The ideas contained in the book being such as unlearned natives can understand and appreciate, and those ideas being expressed in a style resembling that of the Indian languages, it is hoped that the book will be more thoroughly intelligible than ordinary English books to those Hindus who understand English, but who think in the vernaculars. If this little work should fall into the hands of any natives of superior attainments who have studied European sciences and the history of the western nations, their knowledge of history will enable them to confirm the truth of what is stated herein by many remarkable illustrations, which the writer was prevented from making use of by the fear that they would not be understood, and the certainty that they would not be appreciated, by persons who were ignorant of geography and history.
NO European can have resided any length of time in India without having formed some estimate of the religion generally prevalent amongst the people, the religion commonly called Hinduism, or the worship of Siva and Vishnu. He cannot also have failed to form some opinion respecting the relation of Christianity to Hinduism. I think I may safely say that I have enjoyed particularly good opportunities of arriving at a correct judgment, for during the more than forty years that I have been resident in India I have been an attentive reader of Hindu books, and have always had my eyes and ears open to see and hear what was going on amongst the masses. Hindus, therefore, might perhaps like to know the estimate I have formed.
