Following on from the success of his first two novels, Peter J. Uren has continued with the story of the old mechanic, who quickly realises that retirement is not all it is cracked up to be. In this, his third novel, the main character returns to help out his son-in-law, while one of the mechanic's plans come to a crashing halt.In this story, the author deals with a number of difficult subjects, not least being the death of one of the main characters in a motorcycle accident. As the creator of the character, even though he was merely a figment of the author's imagination, he had to deal with some very real emotions, like grief, when he died. It took him more than a fortnight to deal with the issues raised. But there will be some readers who have had to deal with the death of real people as the outcome of a motorcycle accident. The author could not hope to plumb the depths of sadness that some of you will have experienced as a result. But the point is, riding a motorcycle comes with a level of risk to life and limb that is not shared with many other forms of transport. It does not matter how good a rider you are, or how long you have been riding, motorcycle riding is a dangerous activity.

I started writing for myself for two reasons. Firstly, to help me to cope through a very stressful time - my wife's severe illness. I did this mainly through poetry. The second was to share with my friends and acquaintances my motorcycling adventures. It was not until I joined Stroud Writers that I started to develop the skills and techniques of a storyteller. Soon after joining the group, they encouraged me to write fiction, something I always had difficulty with. However, within 16 months of joining, I had written and self-published my first novel. It certainly helped that I wrote on a subject I was passionate about, classic British motorcycles. In successive years, I had another four novels and a booklet of poetry to my name. But there was more to my repertoire than just writing novels and poetry. I found it just as rewarding as an author to write short stories. Indeed, writing a short story, especially when restrictions are given, like a word limit, using particular words, or writing on a specific subject, has made me much more disciplined, and I find the task much more of a challenge. It is also an opportunity for me to demonstrate that I am more than just a one-trick pony.I have been collecting these stories for more than a dozen years, but it was not until a friend suggested that I should publish them, that this book came about.

Dominator in the Shadows is Peter J. Uren's second novel, and the sequel to his popular The Old Mechanic. Set three years later, it tells the story of two men who each have a dream to own their chosen motorcycle: one a Vincent Black Shadow, the other a Norton Dominator 99 650SS. The story again takes the reader through the process of restoring an old classic motorcycle. Along the way, they maintain, repair and service many classic British motorbikes. But the book is more than just about motorcycles; it is a story of the blossoming love between the boss's daughter and her "accidental hero", and the final realisation by the main character that material possessions are a poor substitute for what is really important in life.

The Old Mechanic is Peter J. Uren's debut novel. It tells the story of an old motorcycle mechanic who takes on an apprentice and, together, they restore a classic 1959 Norton 500cc ES2. The story takes the reader right through the process of restoring an old classic motorcycle, from rebuilding the engine to getting the bike on the road. Along the way, they maintain, repair and service many classic old British motorbikes. But the book is more than just about motorcycles; it is about the intergenerational relationship between the two men, and the passing on of a lifetime's worth of knowledge and experience from one generation to the next.
