Uno de los primeros ejemplos de religiosos que buscaban subrayar el hecho en que los indios practicaban todavía la idolatría, en un momento en el que se consideraba que todos eran ya católicos fue Pedro Ponce con su obra Breve relación de los dioses y ritos de la gentilidad. En ella se advierte sobre aspectos cotidianos de la los indios de Zumpango en el arzobispado de México.La redacción de dicha obra pudo ser entre 1575 y 1626 que son los años en los que Ponce era clero secular de ese lugar. Es un texto breve que entre otras cosas habla de los médicos de los indios, de los cirujanos que curan y para hacerlo se valen de invocaciones, de los que ahuyentan el mal tiempo y algunos temas más.Esta Breve relación de los dioses y ritos de la gentilidad sorprende por su imparcialidad y precisión. A diferencia de otras crónicas, aquí las costumbres indias son descritas por Pedro Ponce en su contexto sin comparaciones despectivas, ni una perspectiva cristiana.
