  • - His Life and Work
    av Paul Sédir

Paul Sédir, pseudonym of Yvon Le Loup (1871-1926), published numerous works on Christian Mysticism and Hermeticism. He first collaborated with several esoteric movements of his time; then, following his meeting with the remarkable Christian teacher and healer Master Philippe of Lyon, he devoted himself to serving Christ. In this service he gave numerous lectures, many of which were collected and published as books. Of Sédir's meeting with Master Philippe, the prolific author Dr. Gerard Encausse (Papus), wrote: "There was in Sédir's life a solemn, decisive event that made him grasp the emptiness of secret sciences and societies and placed him forever upon the sole way of the gospel."The present work is the first biography of Paul Sédir published in English (nearly a century after his death!). Part I consists of biographical essays by Émile Besson and Max Camis, close associates of Sédir. Part II is made up of eleven short works and articles, among them: An Unknown, The Master, Druidic Initiation, The Little Shepherd, Meditations Concerning Art, The Faithful Dog, and The Friends of God in Modern Society. Part III contains many letters or letter-extracts to journals and individuals, many of the latter composed during the dark years of WWI, full of practical spiritual counsel."Sédir believed, not without reason, to have found in Master Philippe an authentic witness to spiritual reality, to Hermeticism understood in the same sense as we understand it in these Letters: as the tradition of authentic spiritual experience across the ages, which has the aspects named mysticism, gnosis, and magic."-Valentin Tomberg, Meditations on the Tarot: A Journey into Christian Hermeticism"After the death of the Austrian thinker and seer Rudolf Steiner in 1925, when the revered Bulgarian spiritual teacher Peter Deunov was asked whether great spirits who had already died ever came to his lectures, he replied that only Rudolf Steiner and Paul Sédir attended them."-Harrie Salman, Rudolf Steiner & Peter Deunov

May I be forgiven for having written another. Many anemic souls expect everything from heaven. This is a mistake. Rather: "Help yourself, and heaven will help you!" For this, energy is needed-disciplined, systematic energy. We must undergo a preparation, cleansing, and purification. Preparation is the desire we all have to do well. Cleansing must be bodily, moral, and mental discipline. Purification will be trials coming from the lower worlds, conveyed by the agents of destiny, depending on our strength of resistance and good will. It will also be the invisible work of the angels of Jesus on our cold and hard heart to soften and warm it. The way of using the book is as follows. Each morning, after our first prayer, let us immerse ourselves into the supernatural unknowing of faith and ask God again for His Truth. Then, let us read one of these pages carefully, ardently, in deepest inner silence. Let these readings quickly become contemplations. Let the heart replace intelligence. Let us try to love instead of trying to understand. Then let us pledge ourselves to practice the observance with which each meditation ends."Sédir believed, not without reason, to have found in Master Philippe an authentic witness to spiritual reality, to Hermeticism understood in the same sense as we understand it in these Letters: as the tradition of authentic spiritual experience across the ages, which has the aspects named mysticism, gnosis, and magic."-Valentin Tomberg, Meditations on the Tarot: A Journey into Christian Hermeticism"After the death of the Austrian thinker and seer Rudolf Steiner in 1925, when the revered Bulgarian spiritual teacher Peter Deunov was asked whether great spirits who had already died ever came to his lectures, he replied that only Rudolf Steiner and Paul Sédir attended them."-Harrie Salman, Rudolf Steiner & Peter Deunov

Selections from each gospel are given, together with the author's panoramic commentaries. Far from being outdated, the gospels are shown to be eternally "current" guides to the inner mysteries of Christianity. Sédir especially stresses that reading the gospel is useless if we do not apply it practically in our daily life. He writes: "May those who read my books keep all their emotion, all their enthusiasm, for Him who is their only Master since the creation of their souls, and who will remain their Friend unto eternity."Sédir shows how the justice of God is always vanquished by his love. We are never punished, either for a while or for eternity; rather, when we disobey, we are swept along by the law of disobediences and remain enchained until the greater part of the damages has been redressed. Naturally, these atonements may take a long time, but they all come to an end. Indeed, because of Jesus, who offers us recourse through unending graces, we may even hasten that end."Sédir believed, not without reason, to have found in Master Philippe an authentic witness to spiritual reality, to Hermeticism understood in the same sense as we understand it in these Letters: as the tradition of authentic spiritual experience across the ages, which has the aspects named mysticism, gnosis, and magic."-Valentin Tomberg, Meditations on the Tarot: A Journey into Christian Hermeticism"After the death of the Austrian thinker and seer Rudolf Steiner in 1925, when the revered Bulgarian spiritual teacher Peter Deunov was asked whether great spirits who had already died ever came to his lectures, he replied that only Rudolf Steiner and Paul Sédir attended them."-Harrie Salman, Rudolf Steiner & Peter Deunov

Selections from each gospel are given, together with the author's panoramic commentaries. Far from being outdated, the gospels are shown to be eternally "current" guides to the inner mysteries of Christianity We are led to the inexhaustible riches of spiritual poverty. Freed from acquired habits, we learn to rely on ourselves-on the ardor of our search and the rigor of our moral discipline-to deepen and enlarge our understanding of the gospel. We grasp revealing analogies throughout God' dominions, and that in this quest our Master must be pious love-for, whereas the realm of thought is limited to the universe, Jesus Christ takes us beyond the universe. Our sole care must be to apply all our intelligence to knowing ourselves and all our will to mastering our egoism. As Sédir writes: "May those who read my books keep all their emotion, all their enthusiasm, for Him who is their only Master since the creation of their souls, and who will remain their Friend unto eternity.""Sédir believed, not without reason, to have found in Master Philippe an authentic witness to spiritual reality, to Hermeticism understood in the same sense as we understand it in these Letters: as the tradition of authentic spiritual experience across the ages, which has the aspects named mysticism, gnosis, and magic."-Valentin Tomberg, Meditations on the Tarot: A Journey into Christian Hermeticism"After the death of the Austrian thinker and seer Rudolf Steiner in 1925, when the revered Bulgarian spiritual teacher Peter Deunov was asked whether great spirits who had already died ever came to his lectures, he replied that only Rudolf Steiner and Paul Sédir attended them."-Harrie Salman, Rudolf Steiner & Peter Deunov

Selections from each gospel are given, together with the author's panoramic commentaries. Far from being outdated, the gospels are shown to be eternally "current" guides to the inner mysteries of Christianity. But why does God allow it? Sédir elucidates illness as immanent justice; that what befalls us has been prepared for our improvement by a wise Master who loves us. God only lets us suffer the painful reactions of our own disobediences. Some call this karma. Our task is to show compassion, to open our hearts. This is what we must aim for: welcoming all things and beings with the selfsame kindness-for they are all of them workers for God."Sédir believed, not without reason, to have found in Master Philippe an authentic witness to spiritual reality, to Hermeticism understood in the same sense as we understand it in these Letters: as the tradition of authentic spiritual experience across the ages, which has the aspects named mysticism, gnosis, and magic."-Valentin Tomberg, Meditations on the Tarot: A Journey into Christian Hermeticism"After the death of the Austrian thinker and seer Rudolf Steiner in 1925, when the revered Bulgarian spiritual teacher Peter Deunov was asked whether great spirits who had already died ever came to his lectures, he replied that only Rudolf Steiner and Paul Sédir attended them."-Harrie Salman, Rudolf Steiner & Peter Deunov

Far from being outdated, the gospels are shown to be eternally "current" guides to the inner mysteries of Christianity. Sédir especially stresses that reading the gospel is useless if we do not apply it practically in our daily life. In a representative passage here, Sédir writes: "If your face could, for a mere fraction of a second, be touched by the breath of Jesus's wings, even if you were master of the earth or of the Milky Way, you would catch a glimpse of the Spirit. Through planetary circles, orbs, flying comets, and cosmic hurricane, you would perceive the prodigious descent of the Son sweeping the Spirit along in his wake. You would see his sovereign ascension to the Father in the flamboyant eddies of the Consoler, while suns and stars receded as no more than unknown reddish dots upon the limitless azure of the superior abysses.""Sédir believed, not without reason, to have found in Master Philippe an authentic witness to spiritual reality, to Hermeticism understood in the same sense as we understand it in these Letters: as the tradition of authentic spiritual experience across the ages, which has the aspects named mysticism, gnosis, and magic."-Valentin Tomberg, Meditations on the Tarot: A Journey into Christian Hermeticism"After the death of the Austrian thinker and seer Rudolf Steiner in 1925, when the revered Bulgarian spiritual teacher Peter Deunov was asked whether great spirits who had already died ever came to his lectures, he replied that only Rudolf Steiner and Paul Sédir attended them."-Harrie Salman, Rudolf Steiner & Peter Deunov
