In this exhilarating and sometimes mind-bending book, renowned scientist and author Paul Davies tells the gripping story of how, beginning with an iconic mathematical equation in the 1920s, a radical new theory of nature - quantum mechanics - burst upon the modern world, and how today we are on the cusp of the second great quantum technology revolution. Quantum 2.0 reveals how exotic states of matter that have no counterpart in the everyday world are being harnessed to enable forms of teleportation and 'spooky' telepathic links between remote places. Powerful new tools such as quantum computers, quantum cryptography and the quantum internet have attracted billions of dollars of investments, triggering a frantic quantum arms race. And appearing on the horizon is the most awesome and game-changing prospect of all - quantum AI. Yet underpinning this dazzling promise lies a paradox. Although quantum mechanics is the most successful scientific theory ever, quantum systems possess properties that defy intuition and shred everyday notions of reality. Albert Einstein could never quite believe it. And decades after Erwin Schrödinger introduced his famous cat paradox, scientists are still divided over how to make sense of the weird quantum realm, one where ghostly quantum particles produce tiny forces in nanotechnology, cause black holes to evaporate - and may even be making the universe expand faster and faster. Indeed, cosmologists believe, the imprint of a quantum process remains etched into the afterglow of the big bang. Quantum 2.0 takes the reader gently from the basic concepts to the cutting edge, inviting us all to peek into the new wonderland of quantum physics and glimpse its stunning implications.

This is another blockbuster from Paul Davies, creating a world in the future that exposes the trends of today, such as the extreme concentration of wealth, that will lead to amblytopia - an apparently comfortable yet aimless world, where purpose has all but been eliminated. Paul Davies introduces this world as the introduction to the book: "Post neo-liberalism, post sado-populism, the unimaginably wealthy and powerful have create a global neo-age where need has been all but eliminated - so where is the human spirit now?"The dystopian vision of Orwell's 1984 is recreated in 2084.Nation states have been subsumed into a global world controlled by seven trillionaires. That world is grey and meaningless and there is no spur for human development or aspiration - a neo-age of amblytopia. Paradoxically imagination has become highly prized and yet trivialised. How do individuals survive and live with themselves? What has become of the human spirit? Read this insight into the future and beware.

Perhaps like you, in my youth I was a poet - well, in the sense that I wrote poems and had some published in my university's literary magazine, Icarus. Then adult life - work, family, taxes, and all that - took over for several decades, and I just read some poetry from time to time. In 2019, when I was 79, a humming bird flew up to me as I was sitting in the garden, hovered, looked me in the face, and flew away. I went inside and wrote my first poem for about 55 years. I haven't stopped. All my poems to date - except those that have been torn up or deleted - are in this little book.
