Originally published in 1983 and slightly revised in 1985, joint winner of the Christopher Ewart-Biggs Memorial Prize, States of Mind is an exploration f the ideas underlying Anglo-Irish conflict over the past two centuries. This is a book about nationalism and colonialism and above all about political ideology.

Originally published in 1981, much of the interest of the book lies in its revelation of late eighteenth century anticipations of mid-nineteenth century government. It also explores the differences between the two forms of administration and the reasons for the divergences and discontinuities.

Aims to reveal how the novels of Jane Austen illuminate English history in the quarter century between 1792 and 1817. The book builds a picture of Austen's life and personality and of the social and political world she inhabited in the period during and immediately after the Napoleonic Wars.

First published in 1968, this remains a thought-provoking survey of the history of Ireland from the Act of Union of 1800 until modern times. The second edition, published in 1977, which is reprinted here, includes a chapter on the period 1968-73, taking in the early years of the troubles.
