This volume is dedicated to the memory of the late Dr Brian Taves, Verne and Film Studies scholar who sadly passed away during the preparation of this volume in which he had been a key collaborator.

Ce roman a été terminé et remanié par Michel Verne, après la mort de son père Jules Verne. Un projet de loi ayant été déposé par le député Barsac, tendant à créer cinq sièges de députés dans la Sénégambie, la Haute Guinée et la partie du Soudan français située à l'ouest du Niger, et à accorder l'électorat, voire l'éligibilité, aux gens de couleur, sans distinction de race, cette proposition obtient un franc de succès. Le Ministère est invité à constituer une mission qui parcourra cette région comprise dans la boucle du Niger et qui rédigera un rapport au vu duquel la Chambre statuera ultérieurement. La mission Barsac ayant commencé son périple se heurte au cours de ses investigations à un nombre croissant de difficultés. Ils finissent par être kidnappés et transportés au moyen de machines, mi hélicoptère, mi avions dans une ville, Blackland, inconnue du reste du monde et située en plein désert...
