About The Book Mike's diverse interests include his classic 1969 Porsche, history of the U.S. highway system, seeing and learning about new things and meeting new people. He then shares all with others through his books and magazine articles. This is Mike's second book - part of his effort to help others learn about our past, appreciate our U.S. highways and enjoy contemporary photos of our beautiful country. Mike knows that everyone might not have the classic sports car, the time or physical abilities to take these trips. So he writes about them and hopes you, the reader, will be simultaneously entertained and informed as you share Mike's highway adventures, this time on U.S. Route 95.And that's no bull!
U.S. Route 101 is the westernmost highway of the 1926 U.S. Federal Highway System. A north-south federal highway, it "mirrors" U.S. Route 1 on the U.S. east coast U.S. 101 originally connected our borders with Canada and Mexico between Blaine, Washington and San Ysidro, California. It was, and remains, a major north-south transportation corridor serving Washington, Oregon and California. It is also the longest U.S. highway in California. The highway in 2013 serves in the shadow of the much newer Interstate 5. U.S. 101 also survived the Great California U.S. Highway Mass Extinction of 1964. The 377 mile San Ysidro - Los Angeles segment was decommissioned in the 1970s because a parallel segment of Interstate 5 was nearing completion at the time. For his fourth U.S. highway adventure book, Mike Newlon drove his 1969 Porsche 912 southbound on the full surviving 1,540 mile length of the highway. As with his previous books about other U.S. highways, Mike's perceptive eye and digital cameras present readers with the highway and some of its previous alignments. In addition to the highway itself, Mike's book brings readers the historic architecture, the magnificent California Redwoods, the spectacular Pacific Coast and very active geology along the highway.
Travel America''s "Pacific Highway" in a Classic 1969 Porsche 912U.S. Route 99, unofficially the %u201CPacific Highway%u201D to many, no longer exists. It was replaced by Interstate 5 in the 1970s and has been completely decommissioned. But major sections of former U.S. Route 99 are still very much with us in California, Oregon and Washington.Following his %u201CU.S. Route 395%u201D and %u201CU.S. Route 95%u201D, this is Mike Newlon%u2019s third book about U.S. highway adventures in his classic 1969 Porsche 912.Ride with Mike, perhaps again, on this trip as he drives the full surviving length of historic former U.S. Route 99, northbound from Mexico to Canada, in April of 2008.
