Meet the hero of our story, "Joker!" Joker was an abandoned and starving horse who prayed for a family of his own... before it was too late for him. But, what he didn't know is that there was a little girl praying for her very own horse, too! And, God gave them way more than just a chance to become a family! Despite his meek beginnings, he became a central figure in the lives of all he touched and enjoyed an exciting life of travel, adventure, and stardom with his best human and animal friends! He had a huge personality and got himself into plenty of trouble along the way. But, unexpectedly, he had a health set back when he was diagnosed with Atrial Fibrillation (an issue with how his heart was beating), bringing his competition days in the horse sport of "eventing" (a combination of dressage, cross country and show jumping) to a halt. But, instead of being sad, Joker embraced opportunities to try new things like trail riding and rodeo and even got to carry the American Flag into the arena as the rodeo queen's horse! He went to college, law school, got to be part of a wedding, and gave first rides to children, one being his own human brother. Although he was no longer a show horse, he learned that he had so much more self-worth than his ribbons and success - what was always most important was his kind heart. Told in a rhyming format loved by children (of all ages), follow Joker's journey as he becomes "The Horse with the Golden Heart." This book will appeal to any children (or adults) who have come from meek beginnings, who are looking to overcome current circumstances, who are looking for their place in life, and who know they were made for "more" than their current station in life. And, horse-loving boys and girls will love the details related to Joker's life, activities, and prizes before he is "promoted" to become a kid's horse. It gently approaches the subject of death of a pet and takes a positive outlook at how to handle that loss in an optimistic manner, knowing our loved ones will always be with us in our hearts. This book emphasizes kindness, selflessness, and the unconditional love of a horse and his girl.
In Meg Johnson's second full length poetry collection, The Crimes of Clara Turlington, women break the rules and pass for good girls. As the poem Slugger reveals, ';I could never be / a suspect, cardigan / and pink lips.' Clara Turlington and her contemporaries are contradictions, both trouble-making thrill seekers and faultless products of their environment. '; I didn't know / my mind would become a neon / death scene ...' (Ex's Exit). Scandalous, yet heartfelt, The Crimes of Clara Turlington, is indeed a ';furry pink pillow full of blood and teeth.'
