Book 2 of this series contains a synopsis of the play, La Vie de Bohème, by Henry Murger and Théodore Barrière, and traces the origins of the characters and the events from Murger's novel, Scènes de la Vie de Bohème (abbreviated as Scènes; see Book 1 of the series). An English translation of the play is included based on both the original French and also a Spanish translation.
Book 1 of the La Bohème as Novel, Play, and Opera Series investigates the background of the author of the novel, Scènes de la Vie de Bohème, Henry Murger and his Bohemian friends who would become the models for the characters in the novel. There is also a synopsis of the novel that includes details of the real-life events that were used to develop the story.
Book 3 of this series shows how libretti were created by Ruggero Leoncavallo and by Luigi Illica and Giuseppe Giacosa using various elements of Henry Murger's novel, Scènes de la Vie de Bohème (abbreviated as Scènes; see also Book 1 of the series) and Murger and Théodore Barrière's play, La Vie de Bohème (see also Book 2 of the series). It also contains a comparison of the two libretti.
Book 4 of this series contains a comparison of the music of the operas by Puccini and Leoncavallo along with numerous musical examples. Also featured are historical reviews and critiques as well as a performance history for each opera.
