In the realm of saxophone technique, the fourth finger often emerges as a silent protagonist, influencing the overall mechanical prowess of a musician. From years of teaching and professional performance, it becomes evident that the fourth finger is not merely a peripheral concern; it is often the epicenter of technical deficiencies. By isolating and strengthening this seemingly unassuming digit, saxophonists can unlock a new level of control, agility, and expressiveness in their playing.Alongside the many exercises presented in this book "Finger Fitness for Saxophonists" also includes a 17-week practice plan that may be used throughout a semester. However, it is highly suggested that the various exercises are practiced over several years after they have all been initially mastered to solidify and internalize the associated technical skills.
The 100 improvisational concepts and ideas presented in this book consists of vocabulary that is heard on the recordings of the jazz legends. Throughout jazz history well-known performers such as Jackie McLean and John Coltrane have famously employed the whole tone scale in their solos. It is an absolutely essential device in the toolkit of a well-versed jazz improviser. This book contains 60 phrases that are based on the whole tone scale and is organized in two halves. The first half contains all phrases belonging to the C, D, E, F#, G#, and A# whole tone collections, while the second half contains transpositions of the first half to the C#, D#, F, G, A, and B collections.
This book contains 110 systematically organized ii-V-I phrases. All phrases in this book are "long" ii-V-I, meaning that they span across three measures each. Jazz musician and scholar Gunther Schuller estimated that ii-V-Is roughly represent 70% of all harmonic progressions in tonal jazz. Accordingly, it is essential to be prepared to navigate this crucial progression in every situation (i.e. all keys and tempos).
This book contains 100 licks and patterns of the diminished scale in all transpositions. You will find famous vocabulary pieces associated with tonal jazz as well as rarely played, yet coherently constructed, patterns. This project draws from a wealth of historical and theoretical information and will surely help any motivated musician to broaden his*her knowledge of this famous scale.
This book is an accumulation of strategies that help to navigate and simplify complex and common progressions in jazz. Difficulties often arise when improvisers encounter root motions that are uncommon, such as third cycles, etc. In order to simplify such progressions, multiple strategies such as substitutions and finding common elements can be used. The book also contains advice for making improvisations more coherent and express harmony more effectively with single-note instruments.
