The initial inception for crafting this novella germinated twenty-three years ago. I wanted to devise a type of autobiography underscoring certain experiences in my life, referencing Puerto Rico as the backdrop for its creation. While exploring and searching for my personal ensimismamiento (search within), I adhere to the literary "flow of consciousness" technique in my prose for ruminating on life's meaning, interconnecting my individual and global perspectives. My discourse is derived from my respective perceptions and academic training along with knowledge gained from my travels to Latin America and Europe. For me, writing and speculating on life can be encapsulated at specific and well-defined moments.

Riding a bicycle on a country byway and writing in the quiet chambers of the writer and athlete's own personal solitude represent forms of meditation. Balancing his life from a fulcrum that pivots from a personal to a societal vantage point requires him to navigate many roads with numerous twists and turns. On this journey sometimes the unseen gravel under his wheel causes him to slip and glide unexpectedly crashing into unconsciousness. Upon waking up, he chooses to question his existence in the wake of the influence of some elements of philosophy, history, art, politics and other cultural topics that shape his opinions and raison d'être as a citizen of the global community.Stream of consciousness serves to blend the spiritual, intellectual and physical needs of the diligent wordsmith to examine metaphysical quandaries, much like Don Quixote, that cause him to fall off of Rocinante in order to rise up and equipoise himself again and again. It is in this space of equilibrium where he decides to find meaning and peace within himself and to dialogue with his fellow readers who are interested in untangling the perplexities of living. Instead of avoiding these difficult and confounding philosophical "thorns," as many do, he forges forward with his pen/lance to unravel the mysteries that naturally want to blossom from the seed of unexplored truths. By doing this, he has made a conscious decision to live purposefully, as Goethe would suggest, in a world where he is mindful of himself and others.

City of Voices is a collection of poems written as a type of memoir. Poetry is the axle that continually rotates in search of meaningful imagery to fulfill the yearnings of my soul. (La ciudad de las voces es una recopilación de poemas escritos en forma autobiográfica. La poesía es el eje que gira continuamente en busca de imágenes significativas que satisfagan los anhelos de mi alma.)Some of the pieces, such as "Ya mero," "Hasta la bye, bye," "El pachuco," and "El Álamo," depict the Tex-Mex vernacular of South Texas. I aspire to weave Spanish and English together on multiple levels, interconnecting the Chicano voice with the Anglo influence.Other compositions display an array of lyrical expression of everyday life in San Antonio and perceptions from trips to Ireland and Guatemala with my wife. The echoes we heard in the main courtyard of Tikal, standing between the two primary stone structures or castillos (castles), were the result of clapping our hands together. The Mayans referred to this area as "the place of voices," and this is the image I borrowed to describe these poems, created from my inner voice and perspective.My other books include The Arch''s Prism (2014), a selection of poems, and Solitary Impressions (2016), an autobiography.
