(I)Content is the soul of an artwork.Thus, catching the soul of Chinese calligraphy requires understanding the literary contents. To facilitate this, the Calligraphy Meets Philosophy series presents traditional Chinese calligraphy alongside line-by-line translated texts with remarks and footnotes. As such, it furthers readers' understanding of traditional Chinese thoughts through calligraphy and concise English translations.(II)Calligraphy Meets Philosophy - Talk 2 (¿ ¿¿¿¿¿¿ ¿) highlights some key traditional Chinese philosophical concepts like "Nothingness (¿)", "Form (¿)", "Tranquility (¿)", "Ease (¿)", and "Self Enlightenment (¿¿¿¿)". It does so by having calligraphies and translations of selected literary works by Cao Cao (¿¿, 155-220 AD), Zhuge Liang (¿¿¿, 181-234 AD), Yen Shang (¿¿, 1488-1559 AD), Bai Juyi (¿¿¿, 772-846 AD), Li Bai (¿¿, 701-762 AD), The Nun of the Wujinzhan (¿¿¿¿¿¿, ?-?AD), Wuzu Fayan (¿¿¿¿, ?-1104AD), Longya Judun (¿¿¿¿, 835-923 AD), and Kuiji (¿¿, 632-682 AD). The concluding artwork is the calligraphy of the entire Diamond Sutra (¿ ¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿ ¿) in small standard script (¿¿), followed by a short remark.(III)This book could not have been published without the help of my father, Dr Kwok Kin POON (¿¿¿¿¿). There are currently no satisfactory English translations of prominent classical Chinese calligraphy masterpieces (¿¿, exemplary works that are worth for all to study and observe) like Cao Quan Stele (¿¿¿) and Lanting Xu (¿¿¿). This is the first book that offers line-by-line English translations of the following five Chinese calligraphy masterpieces along with detailed annotations and explanations using historical reference books and texts: 1. Cao Quan Stele (¿¿¿) by an unknown calligrapher (185AD);2. Lanting Xu (¿¿¿) by Wang Xizhi (¿¿¿, 303-361AD);3. Elaborations on the Chronicle of Ni Kuan (¿¿¿¿) by Chu Suiliang (¿¿¿, 596-658AD);4. A Poem on General Pei (¿¿¿¿) by Yan Zhenqing (¿¿¿, 709- 785AD);5. Huai Su's Autobiography (¿¿¿¿¿) by Huai Su (¿¿, 725-785 AD or 737-799 AD).Previous attempts by renowned scholars such as Patricia Ebrey (in translating Cao Quan Stele) and LIN Yutang (¿¿¿, in translating Lanting Xu) contain significant errors and omissions and will be briefly discussed in this book. Hence, serious learners of Chinese calligraphy as well as scholars studying traditional Chinese culture will find this book particularly useful.
A Narrative on Calligraphy (Shu Pu, µ¢╕Φ¡£) was written in 687AD by the renowned Tang dynasty calligrapher Sun Guoting (σ¡½ΘüÄσ║¡) of the seventh century and is regarded to be one of the most important narratives in examining the traditional art of Chinese calligraphy. Yet, there is currently no satisfactory English translation of it. This book provides readers an accurate, annotated, line-by-line, consistent and comprehensive English translation of A Narrative on Calligraphy. Furthermore, various major and fundamental mistakes found in the two previous English translations by Chang & Frankel and De Laurentis are detailed and discussed. This book is the revised and enhanced version of the previous book and delivers an even more precise translation with 20 titled thematic paragraphs that is based on Dr. Kwok Kin POON’s The Vernacular Chinese Translation of Sun Guoting’s A Narrative on Calligraphy (σ¡½ΘüÄσ║¡µ¢╕Φ¡£τÖ╜Φ⌐▒σ░ìΦ¡». Toronto: The SenSeis, Feb. 2019). Kwan Sheung Vincent Poon (µ╜ÿσÉ¢σ░Ü, 1979-) was born in Hong Kong, graduated from Ying Wa College in 1996, and later emigrated to Canada. Studying at the University of Toronto, he completed his BSc as the top graduate in Biochemistry and subsequently obtained his MSc and BEd degrees. He published numerous biochemistry research papers and currently teaches Mathematics and Science at the Toronto District School Board. His passion for Chinese calligraphy began at the age of six when he was under the tutelage of his father Kwok Kin POON (µ╜ÿσ£ïΘì╡, PhD). His books include A Narrative on Calligraphy by Sun Guoting (Φï▒Φ¡»µ¢╕Φ¡£) as well as English Translation of Classical Chinese Calligraphy Masterpieces (Φï▒Φ¡»µ│òµ¢╕).Kwok Kin Poon (µ╜ÿσ£ïΘì╡, 1949- ) was born in Guangzhou, raised in Hong Kong, and now resides in Toronto. He graduated from The Chinese University of Hong Kong (BA, MPh, DipEd), the University of Hong Kong (MA,PhD), and OISE University of Toronto (MEd). He studied Chinese history under Professor YAN Gengwang (σÜ┤ΦÇòµ£¢), Chinese calligraphy under his grandfather TSE Hay (Φ¼¥τåÖ) and Chinese painting under RONG Shushi (σ«╣µ╝▒τƒ│). Dr. POON is a seasoned teacher, researcher, calligrapher, columnist, and has held exhibitions in Hong Kong and Canada.
