"Experiments upon Magnesia Alba, Quicklime, and some other Alkaline Substances" is a groundbreaking paintings by Joseph Black, a pioneering Scottish chemist and physician of the 18th century. The book outlines Black's meticulous experiments and influential discoveries within the realm of chemistry. In this seminal treatise, Black focuses on the chemical properties of magnesia alba (magnesium carbonate) and quicklime (calcium oxide). Through rigorous experimentation, he explores the reactions of those alkaline substances with acids, imparting crucial insights into the character of chemical reactions. A highlight of Black's contributions is his identification and exploration of carbon dioxide gas at some stage in the reaction between magnesia alba and acids. This seminal discovery laid the basis for the information of gases as wonderful chemical entities, revolutionizing the sphere of chemistry. Joseph Black's paintings on magnesia alba, quicklime, and alkaline substances notably advanced scientific knowledge, mainly within the knowledge of chemical reactions and the homes of gases. His influential experiments set the degree for future tendencies in chemistry, making "Experiments upon Magnesia Alba, Quicklime, and some other Alkaline Substances" a foundational textual content inside the records of science.
The two-volume Broadview Anthology of British Literature, Concise Edition provides an attractive alternative to the full six-volume anthology. Though much more compact, the concise edition nevertheless provides a thoughtful balance between well-established canonical authors and a diverse array of lesser-known works. Guided by the latest scholarship in British literary studies, the anthology is committed to inclusiveness, social responsibility, and contextualization. The anthology skillfully balances the representation of widely-agreed upon major works with a thoroughgoing reassessment of the canon that emphasizes diversity, variety, and breadth. With an unparalleled number of illustrations and contextual materials, accessible and engaging introductions, and full explanatory annotations, the concise edition of this acclaimed Broadview anthology provides focused yet wide-ranging coverage for British literature survey courses. Among the works now included for the first time in the bound book of the concise edition are poems by Gwerful Mechain, selections from Giovanni Boccaccio's The Decameron, Samson Occom's autobiography, and selections from Samuel Richardson's Pamela and Frances Burney's Evelina. There are also new omnibus sections--including an expanded "Culture: A Portfolio" section with material on theater and crossdressing, a revised section on "Other Lands, Other Cultures" in the early modern period, and new omnibus sections addressing "The Enlightenment," "Slavery and Resistance," and "Empire and Enterprise." As before, the Concise edition includes a substantial website component, providing instructors with a great degree of flexibility. New to the Concise Edition are a selection from The Táin, Mary Rowlandson's complete narrative, Aphra Behn's The Rover, selections from Henry Fielding's Joseph Andrews, substantial selections from Ottobah Cugoano's Thoughts and Sentiments, and an omnibus section on the environment in the early modern period. Also new to the website are additional tales from Chaucer's Canterbury Tales in facing-column format, with versions in modern English included opposite the original text.
In all six of its volumes The Broadview Anthology of British Literature presents British literature in a truly distinctive light. Fully grounded in sound literary and historical scholarship, the anthology takes a fresh approach to many canonical authors, and includes a wide selection of work by lesser-known writers. The anthology also provides wide-ranging coverage of the worldwide connections of British literature, and it pays attention throughout to issues of race, gender, class, and sexual orientation. It includes comprehensive introductions to each period, providing in each case an overview of the historical and cultural as well as the literary background. It features accessible and engaging headnotes for all authors, extensive explanatory annotations, and an unparalleled number of illustrations and contextual materials. Innovative, authoritative and comprehensive, The Broadview Anthology of British Literature has established itself as a leader in the field. The full anthology comprises six bound volumes, together with an extensive website component; the latter has been edited, annotated, and designed according to the same high standards as the bound book component of the anthology, and is accessible by using the passcode obtained with the purchase of one or more of the bound volumes. In the revised third edition of this volume, the term "Anglo-Saxon" has been removed from our editorial apparatus--a change made in response to recent scholarly work that has drawn attention to the term's historical and current usage by white supremacists. We have also taken the opportunity to implement a small number of additional improvements; the pagination, however, remains the same.
This book has been considered important throughout the human history, and so that this work is never forgotten we have made efforts in its preservation by republishing this book in a modern format for present and future generations. This whole book has been reformatted, retyped and designed. These books are not made of scanned copies and hence the text is clear and readable.
WORK IS IN FRENCH This book is a reproduction of a work published before 1920 and is part of a collection of books reprinted and edited by Hachette Livre, in the framework of a partnership with the National Library of France, providing the opportunity to access old and often rare books from the BnF's heritage funds.
The publication of The Broadview Anthology of Seventeenth-Century Verse and Prose is a literary event; this comprehensive volume is the first anthology of the period to reflect the breadth of seventeenth-century studies in recent decades. Over one hundred writers are included, from John Chamberlain at the beginning of the century to Elisabeth Singer Rowe at its end. There are generous selections from the work of all major writers, and a representation of the work of virtually every writer of significance. The work of women writers figures prominently, with extensive selections not only from canonical writers such as Behn and Bradstreet, but also from other writers (such as Katherine Philips and Margaret Cavendish) who have been receiving considerable scholarly attention in recent years. The anthology is broadly inclusive, with writing from America as well as from the British Isles. Memoirs, letters, political texts, travel writing, prophetic literature, street ballads, and pamphlet literature are all here, as is a full representation of the literary poetry and prose of the period, including the poetry of Jonson; the prose of Bacon; the metaphysical poetry of Donne, Herbert, Marvell, and others; the lyric verse of Herrick; and substantial selections from the poetry and prose of Milton and Dryden. (While Samson Agonistes is included in its entirety, Milton's epic poems have been excluded, in order to allow space for other works not so readily accessible elsewhere.) The editors have included complete works wherever possible. A headnote by the editors introduces each author, and each selection has been newly annotated.
These volumes provide an overview of British literature in its social and historical context from the Anglo-Saxon period through to the twenty-first century. They provide essential background for those unfamiliar with the unfolding of British political, social, economic, and cultural history during each of the six periods into which the study of British literature is commonly divided.
