"Exploitation of a Ship¿s Magnetic Field Signatures" by John Holmes is a groundbreaking exploration of naval technology and strategic warfare. Holmes delves into the intricate realm of magnetic field signatures emanating from ships, unraveling their implications for military operations and defense systems. The book meticulously examines how adversaries can exploit these magnetic signatures for tactical advantage or to devise countermeasures. Holmes, with authoritative expertise, offers insights into the implications for naval tactics, submarine warfare, and the development of magnetic signature mitigation technologies. This work stands as an indispensable guide for naval professionals, defense analysts, and technology enthusiasts, providing a thorough understanding of the nuanced interplay between magnetic fields and maritime security. As a seminal contribution to the field, Holmes' work navigates the complex waters of magnetic signature exploitation, making it a must-read for anyone seeking a deeper comprehension of naval strategy and modern defense mechanisms.

Widely seen as evolution's founding figure, Charles Darwin is taken by many evolutionists to be the first to propose a truly modern theory of evolution. Darwin's greatness, however, has obscured the man and his work, at times even to the point of distortion. Accessibly written, this book presents a more nuanced picture and invites us to discover some neglected ambiguities and contradictions in Darwin's masterwork. Delisle and Tierney show Darwin to be a man who struggled to reconcile the received wisdom of an unchanging natural world with his new ideas about evolution. Arguing that Darwin was unable to break free entirely from his contemporaries' more traditional outlook, they show his theory to be a fascinating compromise between old and new.Rediscovering this other Darwin - and this other side of On the Origin of Species - helps shed new light on the immensity of the task that lay before 19th century scholars, as well as their ultimate achievements.

Decreasing the magnetic field signature of a naval vessel will reduce its susceptibility to detonating naval influence mines and the probability of a submarine being detected by underwater barriers and maritime patrol aircraft. Both passive and active techniques for reducing the magnetic signatures produced by a vessel's ferromagnetism, roll-induced eddy currents, corrosion-related sources, and stray fields are presented. Mathematical models of simple hull shapes are used to predict the levels of signature reduction that might be achieved through the use of alternate construction materials. Also, the process of demagnetizing a steel-hulled ship is presented, along with the operation of shaft-grounding systems, paints, and alternate configurations for power distribution cables. In addition, active signature reduction technologies are described, such as degaussing and deamping, which attempt to cancel the fields surrounding a surface ship or submarine rather than eliminate its source. Darwin's Bards is the first comprehensive study of how poets have responded to the ideas of Charles Darwin in over fifty years. John Holmes argues that poetry can have a profound impact on how we think and feel about the Darwinian condition. Is a Darwinian universe necessarily a godless one? If not, what might Darwinism tell us about the nature of God? Is Darwinism compatible with immortality, and if not, how can we face our own deaths or the loss of those we love? What is our own place in the Darwinian universe, and our ecological role here on earth? How does our kinship with other animals affect how we see them? How does the fact that we are animals ourselves alter how we think about our own desires, love and sexual morality? All told, is life in a Darwinian universe grounds for celebration or despair? Holmes explores the ways in which some of the most perceptive and powerful British and American poets of the last hundred-and-fifty years have grappled with these questions, from Alfred Tennyson, Robert Browning and Thomas Hardy, through Robert Frost and Edna St Vincent Millay, to Ted Hughes, Thom Gunn, Amy Clampitt and Edwin Morgan. Reading their poetry, we too can experience what it can mean to live in a Darwinian world. Written in an accessible and engaging style, and aimed at scientists, theologians, philosophers and ecologists as well as poets, critics and students of literature, Darwin's Bards is a timely intervention into the heated debates over Darwin's legacy for religion, ecology and the arts.

Mr Holmes really gets behind the mind of the dog and "what makes it tick". That is why his advice is so sound.' - Farmer and Stockbreeder'John Holmes has picked out the essentials and backed them up with clear reasons with an enviable skill... No better book could be recommended to a farmer, old or young, who wishes to train working dogs for use with stock.' - Journal of Farmers' Club'Though The Farmer's Dog is essentially intended for the bookshelves of the farmer, or working-dog owner, there is much to interest all lovers of dogs in its pages ... extremely well illustrated.' - Dog World 'He has an understanding of dogs which has hardly been surpassed in the written word and if you are at heart a dog-lover you will enjoy and profit from every chapter.' - Farming News
