Jouée à Weimar en 1782, Le Grand Cophte est une pièce burlesque, une comédie en cinq actes qui accable de sarcasmes le thaumaturge, sous le nom de comte Rostro. Extrait: "En effet, chacun me croit en disgrâce, éloigné pour jamais de la cour. Les regards des personnes qui me rencontrent expriment la pitié et même le dédain. Je ne me soutiens que par une grande dépense, par le crédit de mes amis, par l'appui de quelques mécontents. Fasse le ciel que mes espérances ne soient pas trompeuses ! que ta promesse s'accomplisse !"
Publié pour la première fois en 1795, ce conte de que Goethe a intitulé Entretiens d'émigrés allemands raconte les histoires des émigrés allemands chassés de leur patrie. Ici Goethe nous fait découvrir l'irruption du monde spirituel dans le monde physique.
Cette pièce raconte l'histoire d'Amine et de son amant, Éridon, qui est très jaloux. Éridon est opposé à ce qu'Amine aille danser à un bal sans lui, mais lui-même ne veut pas y aller.Pour aider Amine, une de ses amies, Églé et son amant Lamon vont longuement parler avec elle, puis Églé séduira Éridon alors qu'il pense à Amine. Durant ces quelques secondes ils s'embrassent et désormais Éridon ne peut plus en vouloir à Amine car il a embrassé également quelqu'un d'autre. Éridon comprend que le fait d'être avec d'autres hommes sans pour autant succomber montre à quel point Amine est éprise de lui.
Werther est un jeune homme qui s'installe à W (Wetzlar) pour peut-être faire carrière. Là, il se promène dans la nature pour la dessiner, car il se croit artiste. Un jour il est invité à un bal au cours duquel il rencontre une jeune femme prénommée Charlotte (Lotte), fille d'un bailli, qui depuis la mort de sa mère s'occupe de ses frères et de ses s¿urs. Werther sait depuis le début que Charlotte est fiancée à Albert. Cependant, Werther tombe immédiatement amoureux de la jeune fille qui partage avec lui les goûts de sa génération, en particulier pour la poésie enthousiaste et sensible de Klopstock. Werther rencontre Albert, et lui reconnaît de nombreuses qualités : il s'enfuit pour tenter d'oublier Charlotte...
Publié pour la première fois en 1770, Le Frère et la s¿ur est une comédie en un acte de Goethe. Ce dernier a 21 ans quand il l'écrit. Sa relation avec sa s¿ur Cornelia l'aurait amené à évoquer le thème de la relation frère-s¿ur dans plusieurs de ces écrits, dont évidemment celui-ci fait partie. Il écrit : Je ne sais, lorsqu'il est assis à table, et qu'il appuie la tête sur sa main, qu'il baisse les yeux et reste soucieux et rêveur, je puis être des heures assise à le regarder. Il n'est pas beau, dis-je quelquefois en moi-même, et cela me fait tant de plaisir de le regarder ! Oui, je sens bien à présent que c'est aussi pour moi qu'il s'inquiète ; oui, son premier regard me le dit, quand il relève les yeux, et cela c'est beaucoup.
