Wer mit rechtem Ernst suchen will der findet bald, das empfand ich, als ich vor einigen Jahren mit meinem Schwager Wilhelm von Ploennies diese Sammlung anlegte. In unserm Wohnort Darmstadt war natürlich für dieselbe nichts zu gewinnen, darum zogen wir in den Odenwald, um dort in der noch weniger von der sogenannten ¿Aufklärung¿ und dem ¿Fortschritt¿ angesteckten Bevölkerung die frisch duftenden Blüthen zu lesen. Unsere Streifereien lohnten sich über alle Erwartung, eine Sammlung wuchs neben der andern auf und wir sahen uns bald so reich, daß wir an eine Herausgabe denken konnten. Da öffnete sich uns plötzlich eine neue, viel näher liegende und unendlich reiche Quelle; wir erkannten, daß wir von Tausenden von Märchenerzählern umgeben waren, an die wir bisher gar nicht gedacht hatten. Wilhelm, welcher Lieutenant in Großherzoglich Hessischen Diensten ist, ließ die Soldaten Mann für Mann aufmarschiren und sagen und singen was sie wußten, Märchen, Sagen, Legenden, Beschwörungen, Aberglauben, Lieder. Da strömte der Segen so reichlich, daß an ein Ausarbeiten kaum mehr zu denken war, weil wir die Hände zum Einsammeln und vorläufigen Ordnen zu sehr gebrauchten. Mit unserm Reichthum wuchs unsere Freude an den verschiedenen Sammlungen. Wilhelm überließ mir die Soldaten; er zog während ich zu Hause sammelte, allein zu unsern alten Freunden im Odenwalde und seine Bemühungen wurden durch manchen kostbaren Fund gelohnt; so trug er u.a. eines Tages zwei der schönsten Märchen, das ¿von der schönen Schwanenjungfer¿ und ¿die eisernen Stiefel¿ heim.
