October 1944. After almost three years of titanic struggle, the United States Navy has forced their Japanese opponents into one final titanic struggle: The Battle of Leyte Gulf. Aboard the battleship Yamato, Vice Admiral Matome Ugaki is the sole survivor of an American airstrike. With the Center Force Ugaki now commands having suffered grievous losses, the sky full of American warplanes, and an uncertain situation in front of him, no rational person criticize a retreat. Bushido, however, is not rational, nor does Japan have the luxury of seeking battle another day. The Center Force must reach the American beachhead...or die trying. Vice Admiral Willis Lee does not understand Bushido, but he can read a map. Despite aviators' claims to have sent the Japanese fleet fleeing, Lee is considering insubordination when an engineering casualty forces his hand. Regardless of what dawn will bring for the carriers of Third Fleet, Lee will take Task Force 34 south to guard the exit of San Bernadino Strait. Meanwhile, the U.S.S. Johnston rides herd on a small group of aircraft carriers designated "Taffy 3" off the coast of Samar. To her captain's disappointment, the tides of war have prevented her from participating in the unfolding battle in Surigao Strait. For Ensign Jack Murphy, things couldn't be better. He's happily counting down the days until the United States Navy strangles the Empire of Japan by fishing aviators out of the ocean and hunting for nonexistent submarines. Pure Fate has brought him to the Johnston, and he is ready for the fickle goddess to carry him just as safely off the destroyer's deck when she next docks. Unbeknownst to all three men, when dawn breaks on the 25th of October the lives of thousands will turn on their decisions. Titans will clash, with the fate of the Philippines hanging in the balance!

With his own combatant status uncertain, Adam must rush to save as many of his Polish-speaking pilots as he can. Getting out one step ahead of the Nazis, Adam embarks on a continent-spanning odyssey that will put him at odds with his former employers, his family, and all three of the Axis powers.Thrust unwillingly into combat between the fleeing Royal Navy and the pursuing Kriegsmarine, Lieutenant (j.g.) Eric Cobb must immediately make choices that not only affect himself, but will alter the course of American national policy. In the Pacific, Rear Admiral Tamon Yamaguchi witnesses firsthand the myriad opportunities that Germany's victory has provided for Japan. After suffering ignominous defeat at the hands of the Soviet Union in December 1941, the Emperor has forcibly removed the militarists that saw his nation almost driven from the continent. With the Navy now dominating the cabinet, Japan's government cast its gaze southward, to the oil rich Dutch East Indies. Yamaguchi, as the new head of the Kido Butai, must develop a plan that prevents American interference while simultaneously husbanding the Imperial Japanese Navy's strength for a single, great Decisive Battle."[R]ecommend[ed] to anyone looking for a good war alternate history..."--Amazing Stories, America's First Sci-Fi Magazine**** THIS IS A COLLECTION FOR JAMES YOUNG'S USURPER'S WAR. IT CONTAINS BOTH ACTS OF WAR and COLLISIONS OF THE DAMNED AT A REDUCED COST***
My God, we are losing this war.-Lt. Nicholas Cobb, USNMarch 1943. The Usurper's War has resumed, with disastrous results for the Allies. The U.S. Pacific Fleet lies shattered after the Battle of Hawaii, its battleships decimated and its carriers savaged. The Imperial Japanese Navy, flush with victory and with their flanks appearing secure, turns their gimlet gaze to the south and the ultimate prize for their Emperor: The Dutch East Indies. For Commander Jacob Morton and the other members of the Asiatic Fleet, the oncoming Japanese storm is not unexpected. Despite this, the IJN's victory means U.S.S. Houston and her Allied companions will have to fight against overwhelming odds, at night, against an enemy who claims the darkness as their own. Above the Houston and the Allies' other old, tired companions, Flight Lieutenant Russell Wolford leads his men in their attempt to use new technology to negate the Japanese advantages in training. Beset on all sides, the American, Commonwealth, Dutch, and Australian (ACDA) forces resolve to hold out until the Allies' industrial might can be brought to bear.On the Japanese side, the Dutch East Indies Campaign quickly becomes an attritional maelstrom that they did not expect. Vice Admiral Yamaguchi, commander of the Kido Butai and victor of Hawaii, finds himself fighting to preserve the First Air Fleet's carrier wings rather than fritter them away in a battle of attrition. For even as brave pilots such as Lieutenant Isoro Honda and his fellow Shiden pilots cut a bloody swathe through their Allied counterparts, Yamaguchi realizes each pilot that falls is an almost irreplaceable resource for Japan. Like any seasoned warrior, Yamaguchi knows a sword grows duller with even a victorious strike...and The Decisive Battle looms.Collisions of the Damned is the continuation of the Usurper's War series. Picking up where Acts of War left off, this book contains even more relentless combat and breathless naval actions than its predecessor. As Japan confronts a divided United States and its desperate allies, ordinary men and women are forced to make decisions that will have far reaching consequences for both themselves and their nations.
This book is a powerful survey of the whole of U.S. political thought and a trenchant critique of contemporary political debates. It is essential reading for anyone who cares about the future of U.S. political thought or, indeed, about the future of the country itself.
Re-evaluating Louis Hartz's interpretation of American politics 40 years ago in "The Liberal Tradition in America", this book examines significant movements in US history and argues that the liberal tradition is richer and more complex than Hartz and most contemporary theorists have admitted.
Records the never-ending antics of a picaresque circus of addicts, outsiders and misfits who travelled the world encountering an equally bizarre and extraordinary mixture of people. John Cale, Allen Ginsberg and Gregory Corso are among those who appear in the ultimately tragic story of Nico, the last Bohemian. Originally published in 1992.
